Do you drive around with your eyes closed? Have you read MEG lately?

i have been to MEG meet no chavs there, blokes with mid life crisis yes.

i have also never spoken to a mk4 astra owner who hasnt started by telling me why they didnt buy the focus.... "but the astra is .5 secs quicker to 60"

i dont restrict brands, i would happily have vw/seat/audi/bmw even rover.. i have had ford cars because they always fit the bill for me compared to anything else..

They are all over the forum - they were before and I doubt they've left. Mondeos with enormous Ford stickers, badly fitted subs, dodgy mods, horrific wheels.

Nothing under £20k is safe from chavs except for the odd Volvo and perhaps Kia.

sorry but they are not better then average no way, fords however are they offer a much nicer drive, cheaper and easier to fix, cheaper parts and servicing costs, and thats not me waffling have a look on parkers and what car, ive read vaux is 25% (on average) more expensive to repair then ford. i wouldn't be seen dead in a vaux they all look like cheap sales rep cars and the old ones (mk4 astra and corsa c espeically) just end up being driven by complete chavs and scum, whereas i have NEVER seen a chav in a focus or a mondeo.

I've heard of some weird phobia's but this is a first..

If I look on what car
Astra Sport Hatch (4 stars) -"Drives as well as its sporty looks suggest. Cabin is roomy and of very high quality"
Astra Hatch (4 Stars) - "The Astra has the measure of its rivals to drive, providing a supple ride and composed handling. Good interior space and quality."
Corsa Hatch (4 stars) - "The Corsa is refined, comfortable and good to drive. Ownership costs are affordable and the cabin is spacious and classy."
Vectra (4 stars) - "The Vectra offers outstanding refinement, is comfortable, and has reasonable running costs."
Zafira (4 stars) - "Versatile seven-seat cabin; spacious; classy fittings; good to drive"

Now, I know they aren't class leading in the driving involvement arena, but most models handle very well, the base model 5th gear test, a 1.6 Focus Vs 1.6 Astra, the Astra beat it around the track, but tiff did say it was not as involving, that doesn't mean it was 'crap'..
The VXR Astra whips a focus ST/Golf GTi around the the track as well, the Veccie VXR was praised by EVO magazine when road test against the EVO/Impreza/BMW 330.. The Zafira VXR was faster around the track then the SMax (Both beaten by the merc B Class!)

I'm not saying they are class best at all, I think there is overwhelming evidence to suggest however they are above average..

What a load of rubbish.

I had a mk3 astra, the engine blew after me abusing it and 150k miles on the clock, cost £80 for an engine and gearbox. Toke less than a day to fit and still drives like a wee gem..

Never saw a chav in a focus are you kidding? Do you walk about with your eyes closed. Never saw one in a fiesta?

Now I agree astras and corsas are commonly "done up" with mad body kits and very bad tasting alloys and "phat" exhausts. But I wouldn't say no more so than fiestas and focuses.

New Corsa admitedly isnt that bad. Astra VXR is quicker but only becuase they just gave it loads of power. Ditto Zafira VXR.

What Car has to be the most dull magazine ever though. It reviews cars as if they were dishwashers. Great for Mr Average but not so great for enthusiasts.

Some choice extracts from Autocars review of the Astra SRi..

You can’t really fault the SRi’s outright pace on paper, with the 0-60mph sprint taking 9.5sec. But the long haul to the red line is a dreary trek. Anyone remotely interested in cars will find little to inspire.

The gearbox has a light but unremarkable shift, but absolutely refuses to be rushed unless the driver uses brute force. It’s difficult to fault the brakes, with a fine stopping time of 2.4sec from 60mph to zero and good resistance to fade. But, despite the good performance figures, the mushy pedal failed to inspire confidence.

The electro-hydraulic power assistance robs the steering of most of its feedback.

Next to the Focus’s near-nervous agility, however, the Astra feels passive. Where a Focus – and to a lesser extent, a Golf – relishes a challenging road, the Astra is a more reluctant partner. The torsion beam thumps over ruts mid-corner. Push hard and it gets upset more easily.

Just to provide a contrast.

The two occasions I've rented from Enterprise it has been Astra and Meriva - Meriva was truely dire but the Astra was 'alright'. But thats the problem. Being alright isnt good enough when Focus and Golf are both excellent.

infact i propably would have a very late facelift omega v6 i bet they're smooth and comfy, dunno if they're better value then mondeos though??

I think the current crop of VX's arent bad at all, certainly close to the current focus and mk3 Mondeo, the Corsa is excellent compared to the Fiesta.

Ive spent a lot of time in mediocre-class (ie just below the germans:p) cars over the last 3-4 years, and Ford and VX are closer than ever, i actually enjoyed my time in a Astra SRI, not too bad to drive, decent seats for once, and decent interior materials on the whole....apart from the centre console, cheap as hell (and all the current VX's suffer the same cheapness).

They arent cars you aspire to own,as said above they dont seem to excel at anything, just do everything ok, which is fine for 95% of the population.

Im going on the VXR track day in a few months so id like to really try the Corsa and Astra and see how they compare to the ST, ive a feeling the AVXR will come alive on the track.

I am laffing my backside off at the Vaux hater's in here, most of which are going by what nonsense they have read from other posters and agreeing with them.

Have any of you lot that are slating VX's actually drven a one recently?.

Nope.....?

Didn't think so.

i think the only "vauxhall" car i like is the vx220, tis a very nice car imo :)

Same, but then it shares something like 130 parts from a Lotus and Lotus basically mapped the car and handling etc.

So it isn't really a Vauxhall!

The only 3 cars I like from Vauxhall are:

VX220
Monaro
VXR Astra
