My boss said the same to me, but couldn't give me an answer other than "Because it looks nicer" when I asked why
Any actual reason to do so or is it just a personal preference kinda thing?

Here are some options. Much of a muchness, tbh. Unless you're in immediate danger I'd wager you won't find much difference.
Which is why he should use IE7
