Thought I'd give defrag a try today as I haven't done it since I last formatted which was some months ago, or since upgrading to Vista for that matter. I have to say my first impressions of the Vista defray utility are quite poor really. Even when using the improved SP1, there is no visual representation of the drive state like there was in XP, and it doesn't give you any idea of how complete the defrag is - not even a percentage complete.

I turned defrag on this morning and it displayed

Defragmenting hard disk (C:)...
This may take a few minutes or a few hours

Well, it has been 8 hours now, and it's still saying the same thing. Can anyone tell me what is going on?

I get the same , Vista x64 , i don't know whether it is actually doing anything !

Much preffered a visual of some sort.

Hard disk is definately doing something, but I haven't got the free time to leave the PC out of action for 10+ hours.

Get O&O Defrag. I'm using Version 10 Professional. Much, much better then the built in defraging application.

i have been using Perfect disk since version 8 swapped over from Disk Keeper 10, PD8 found fragmentation that DK10 missed/didnt defrag.

PD is now on version 2008 you can download a 30day trial and see if it suits your needs

originally used perfect disk (came with me from xp days) but that doesn't like offline defrag on vista x64 so got O&O defrag instead and that seems to work ok, its taking an age this time after the sp1 updates, should be quicker after that I hope :o

The offline defrag for Perfect Disk 2008 has been fixed in the latest software update it now works fine under Vista x64
