Had some money burning in my pocket today, went to Meadowhall and they have a few nice jewelers. I have always been an Omega fan, but I have been drawn to Breitlings recently. So I came away with this beauty.

This Breitling is a super quartz calibre, far more accurate than non thermally compensated quartz calibres. It will be accurate to within + or -15 seconds per year.

List price is £1250, discount was £150 so got it for £1.1K, with full 2 year Authorised Dealer guarantee. If you buy from the internet you run the risk of having an invalid warranty as Breitling claim not to deal with problems with watches not sourced from their ADs. If the warranty isn't stamped and signed up then you can have big problems getting these watches serviced under warranty.
Plenty of Gray market watches out their but I didn't want to run the risk of having no comeback if I have any problems. Seen these for £1k on the net but I think the extra £100 for peace of mind was worth paying.

I love walking into town and seeing absoloutely retarded prices for watches, i think anything upto maybe a grand is ok but a bit excessive(id never spend that much). See watches for 24k and over that looks like theyve dropped out of a bloody kinder egg.

And what advantage does it have over this watch for 50 quid...well sir its accurate upto 24 5th's of a second..secondly its all gold so it comes with this handy winch and pulley assembly to pull your arm up when you want to check the time.

What advantage does an Aston have over a Fiesta? Why bother getting granite worktops? Etc etc.

Some people like having nice things. Whether you consider them nice, or whether they are worth what they pay doesn't really matter.

Yeah but on the grand scale of things how often do you sit and look at a watch? If you're in some kind of flashy car i can see there would be an enjoyable experience to that, somehow i doubt looking at a watch costing umpteen thousands of pounds would compare to flying down the m1 in a ferrari.

It is much, much faster?

With watches it is less obvious why people would pay so much more for something which often do the same job to a worse degree(eg: mechanical watches).

However, I see the appeal.

Yeah, but I don't think people with a 20K watch are buying it instead of paying the mortgage - you only buy these things if you can afford them.

It's not about function, it's about the status and associated pleasure that all luxury goods are sold on.

Its a case of "I can afford something nice, so I'm going to buy it as it will please me".

As nice as the watch is, I would NEVER spend anywhere near that. At the end of the day its a watch. But then again, the people that spend that kind of money have properly own everything else they want.

I own a swatch watch, has kept perfect time for the last year. And its got the date!
