Disilusioned with games, need ideas!

I've always had decent gaming rigs and the latest consoles, been a game for as long as I can remember. Last November I got a nice new Q6600/GF 8800 based rig and have pretty much only played COD4 since then, the latest games don't really seem to interest me anymore, they are recycled sequels or poor adaptions of old themes, especially FPS's, they just aren't as much fun as they used to be.

I've got a PS3 at home gathering dust (good media centre/Blu-Ray player though) and a top notch gaming rig that isn't getting enough action. I like sports, FPS, RTS games primarily, is there anything I should be looking forward to? Or any games in the last 12-18 months that I might have missed, haven't played Crysis/Bio-Shock for instance.

Well theres two mentioned already

crysis and bioshock, both are excellent and should run fine on the rig.
 
Yeah, they are kinda obvious though, I imagine I won't like Crysis as I never really saw the fascination in FarCry but Bio-Shock I will check out.
 
Just pick Crysis up. IMO it's very different to a lot of other shooters. There's wide open spaces that give you a lot of freedom to play how you want. Also play Oblivion, Company of Heroes and Medieval 2 Total War, if you haven't already.
As for new releases - I actually really don't know.
 
I know what you mean about gaming. Im kinda getting fed up with it atm, its all very stale. Hopefully we can actually get a summer this year, and come back at the end of the year refreshed.

TBH I am still not done working my way through the massive heap of releases we got in October-November. I don't know how anyone at this point can say gaming is boring.
 
I think I have burn out more than anything, pretty much been going at it since 2002, then I found wow which kinda left me feeling dirty, used, and disillusioned ever since I quit more than 2 years ago.

COD4 has kept me going

Ah yeah, burn out I can understand. I've burned out my Xbox 360 at the moment, just can't face turning it on and I'm not sure why as I do like to play on it in general.

I've burned out COD4 too, the maps are just too small for me and I can't keep up with the pace. :(
 
Hmm, I fear I may get the same problem. I'm still a graphics generation behind (should have my new rig up and running in a week or so) so I'll get the initial wow factor...but after that what? I've had some really good experiences on my Wii despite the generally poor graphics (even by GC standards! Some of the developers have done a poor optimisation job) but there are only so many shooters I can get through before I'll get very bored. I want innovation and long, gripping storylines...yet am I really going to get that with Crysis etc?

Not with Crysis, Crysis is all about action and being able to balance your combat abilities. The storyline as a whole isn't really much special and it's pretty short, but it's still a good game.

Call Of Duty 4 is similar but has a better storyline (in my opinion), but is more linear.

You could try The Witcher, people around here rave over it. :)
 
I don't know how old you guys are or how much time you spend gaming but once upon a time, I used to spend quite literally 10+ hours each day gaming and 16+ on weekends. I used to get bored as well but found it was only phases. I don't play nearly as much anymore and I find I don't get bored as often.. but even still, I go through little phases. It'll pass.

I think by restricting yourself to the last 12-18 months you are limiting your options a bit, due to the incredible backcatalogue which is available on PC. I did some analysis on the games I'd completed over the previous 4 years, and discovered that around a third of them were over a year old when I played them (examples including some very highly regarded titles such as Deus Ex, Mafia, Freelancer, Freespace 2, Call of Duty, MOHAA, NOLF2, Halflife, KOTOR, Jedi Knight 2....). There are LOADS of good games out there priced very cheaply, fully patched up and old enough to actually run smoothly in max settings unlike most modern games.

The other alternative is maybe to broaden your horizons a bit and look at other genres. There are some terrific RPGs, Racing, Strategy etc games out there.

Apart from the unemployed and very slack students, I can't think of anyone who can have had time to play through all the good games from the current decade.
 
If your bored try armed assault ( arma) - the islands are 20km x 20 km and it takes ages to even fly across it in a helicopter.

You can fly a harrier or A-10 , drive a abrams tank , jeep or even run about on foot.
Only problem is the game is pretty hard and has a steep learning curve ( which does keep the bf2 noobs away thankfully)

if you want something a bit different, try the myst series of games. The first game is an obvious place to start though older now (and not graphically impressive anymore), Riven (Myst 2) is regarded as perhaps the best game. These are puzzle games that require exploration and thinking out of the box, I love em :) Also Schizm is another superb game in the same genre.
