Ok, I've wanted to play the electric guitar for AGES.. I bought one and then realised it was crap..

I was conned into buying a start pack which consists of an Ashton Guitar and a small amp.. but it works fine.. suppose it's ok to start with..

I'm just finding it REALLY hard to teach myself.. saw a few people play.. felt the old usual "Bahh.. looks easy.. I'll bet I can do that with a few practices".. No.. it's definitely NOT like that haha..

Just wondering.. anyone up to helping me out learning to play?

Would appreciate it ;)

Start by learning some easy chords? Then apply said chords to a song you like. Try Highway to Hell by ACDC.
I'm no expert, but that should get you going.

look for the hal leonard teaching dvd. i have just started learning from it recently (two days ago) and it is really good.

i find it better to play melodies rather than just chords as you can actually hear a song and it teaches you how to play each string separately.

the dvd above teaches you some basic songs right away and it really helps - makes me feel like i've made lots of progress already!!

i find dvds and videos much better to learn from than reading about stuff.

good luck!!

hmmmm.

ok.

I take it you got a book of chords with that starter pack ?

Biggest problem you will face to begin with is your fingers just dont want to go into those weird positions.... right ?

Keep trying... They will !!

Next up when you actually start getting the chord shapes right is you dull the sound.. its not because you have fat fingers... its because you dont have the strength in them yet.

So how do you build muscle ?

By repetition. I know it hurts. Keep doing it. Make those finger tips glow.

ok.. some easy tips for chords.....

If you find you just cant do a chord... DONT give up... Chords repeat all over the fretboard. YUP.. the same chord. Choose another shape to do that chord.

Now for an easy way to "do the chord scale" (or half of it anyway.)

Look in your chord book... see how they tell you to do E using fingers 1,2 and 3 (little finger being 4).. right.. get your fingers in that shape ... on E chord. now instead of using fingers 1,2 and 3.. use fingers 2,3 and four.. so your not using finger 1

This is really important so practice using the fingers I told you about so you get the shape & sound right.

Have you suceeded ? That should be pretty damn easy to do.

Now keep the same finger shape... ie: dont take them off the strings... just rest them in that shape and slide up ONE fret.. now add finger 1 across the whole 6 strings. angle that finger slightly and turn it kinda on its side to make it comfortable.

You are now doing a "Rock style " F chord

Keep EXACTLY the same finger shape but slide up TWO frets

Your now doing a G chord

Two more frets and its an A chord

Two more and its a B chord

ONE more and its a C chord

You getting the idea ?

Practice that shape around the neck

Let us know how you get on.

You're problem is that you sound like you give up easily. Find tabs of songs you want to learn, and play along, obviously, start with songs that have simple setups.

Wow, thanks for the advice.. Going to try this tomorrow. ;)

Some of us have more important things to pay for before thinking about teachers.

You CAN do it, mate... You need motivation to KEEP doing it though. Set ONE HOUR per day aside... NO interruptions, to practice. You dont even need the amp switched on.. that'll just pee the neighbours off.

When you manage to string together three or four chord sequences together your'll feel the neck kinda buzzing (not the strings) in your hand and it feels real good.

Just keep at it.

Can read tabs.. I just get frustrated when it takes me like 5 seconds to find the note.. I'm a perfectionist and hate it when things dont sound right lol..

Yeh, im not great, but i just open guitar pro and keep trying and trying and it falls into place.

Get a few songs you could learn at the same time and like rotate around them so your not playing the same thing over and over again and getting bored of it.

Download Audacity (its free), this will let slow songs down enough so you can play along, then gradually speed them back up as you get better.

Nice! Just watched them.. going to give that a go!

EDIT: Dude, do you have any more videos? They're really helpfull! Could do with a few more ;) Basics..
