More specifically the 2004 1.8T 20V 3dr Cupra version.

I've been looking at the specs at these and they are:

Engine Size 1781 cc
Cylinders 4
0-60 mph 7.1 s
Power Output 177 bhp
Valves 20
Torque 245 Nm 180 lb-ft
Top Speed 142 mph

----

So it's faster than the Saab, probably more economical due to size/weight. It'll keep me happy until I turn 21 and head for something Japanese...

Anyone know much about these? I've run insurance quotes and it's only slightly (about £100) more expensive than the Saab - any common problems, faults, things to look for when buying etc. I've heard this particular model is rare.

After driving my sisters 1.9 TDi version this morning I've decided I really like these, I like the interior, dials are nice, seats are comfy. Obviously this will all be slightly different in the Cupra version but I've got some idea of what they are like at least :).

Thanks all,
Jacob

Drove the 1.9TDi for a week, bit too low on the ground for me and claustrophobic, otherwise a reasonable amount of poke. Have two mates with Ibizas, 1.9 and 1.4 Tdi diesels, both suffered the windows dropping in and power window failure on the passenger side and my mate blew out a turbo hose (what he told me anyhow, lotsa black smoke belching) with the 1.9 but that was sorted easily.

I know you won't like this but...

Keep the Saab. Save, save, save and save some more.

And then buy something nice and jap in a few years :)

this is sound advice. Don't got for a warm hatch that offers nothing special whatsoever.

I'll be buying Jap goodness next year on exactly the 19th of July when I turn 21.

However I'm bored of my current car and want something new and I really like the look of these 1.8 Turbo Cupra's :)

Looks better than his Saab in every way

...

Hardly a brilliant reason to spend a load of money on a car (6.5k ish?) that he'll be getting rid of in just over a year...

Lets not beat around the bush..... a thousand things look better, doesn't mean he should buy them. Seems like Phate is wanting to impulse buy again ;)

Simple fact is I'm bored of my car so I want a new one. What's hard to understand?

If I was impulse buying again then I would have gone and bought one this afternoon without looking into them.

The Ibiza/Fabia/Polo is one of the blandest cars you could possibly get - completely lacking any sort of character or 'fun' factor. From the outside it looks like something from the 1980s, from the inside, swathes of bland hard grey plastic everywhere. It goes, it stop, its steers, its fairly well built and reliable but the car was conceived to do a job - a bit like a washing machine or a fridge. Its wooden to drive - a bit like driving a wardrobe on wheels. Completely devoid of any personality or character.

The VAG 1.9 turbo diesel is also absolutely hideous. Quite possible the worst diesel engine I have ever heard. It's like its been taken from a tractor. And it makes a bland car incredibly noisy and even more hideous to drive.

Why on earth you'd want to buy one of these over a Clio 182 or Cooper S is mind boggling.

Its perfectly easy to understand that, but wouldn't you rather save your money and buy something amazing in just over a year. Why go out and spend 7k on a Seat Ibiza?

I said you are wanting to impulse buy.

I'd rather something refreshing and nicer to drive for the next year then sell that and buy something amazing when I hit 21 :)

Ah, I mis-read. Whoops.

According to Seat's website the closest one for sale to me is 75 miles away at a stealer. Bleh.

Time to hunt around pistonheads etc....

Well, I really like them. Pokey enough, cheap but functional interior. I once hit a penguin in an 05 plate one on a test track :)

Every time I go to Spain, I hire a 1.9 TD variant of the Ibiza and enjoy it very much.

The engine has plenty of grunt, is very economical and the car can be thrown about with ease.

"Tractor engine" could not be further from the truth!

Previously I'd have never considered one, now, I'd quite happily have one if space was not an issue for me.

I'd hazard a guess that the OP wants one of these over a Clio 182 or Cooper S due to the price difference?

:) A cone...during a ABS handling section of a driving course at Prodrive's Warwick test facility. They call them penguins...no idea why.

There was a rookery of Penguins in the middle of the road that I had to avoid....unfortunately on the first attempt I'm sad to say there were casualties...

Seriously tho, I've driven all sorts and they're fun little cars. You could do much worse.
