Where would you stand insurance wise if you bought a car that had been chipped without you knowing? (Obviously you'd be pleased like...)

Lets use a vRS for example. It's chipped from 180bhp to 220bhp or whatever and you bought it and insured it as standard. Then stacked it! Would you have a leg to stand on?

You can't be expected to ensure that a car actually IS standard to some extent can you? Especially when no mention of it in the ad?

And then what's to stop you actually chipping it yourself and claiming it was done beforehand? :p Take it it will show when it was done etc?

IIRC Foxtrot(?) recently bought a car which turned out to be chipped didn't he?

Cheers

It'd be your fault.

But even if you did stack it, the chance of them checking to see if its been remapped is VERY low.

But with a VRS they are normally remapped uning the ECU so there isnt even an extra part arent they?

Just make sure you stack it properly so it ends up on fire

I would imagine if there was a big fat chip on the ECU and they noticed it you'd be in trouble.

They are live remapped, so nothing is physically change. Just the boost levels / fueling etc.. on the standard ecu.

I've personally declared all my mods (including a remap). Insurance isn't THAT much more if you go with the right people with the mods. I think it's worth it for peace of mind.

a lot of people don't declare them though, like some others have said you might get lucky and they won't check anything.

chips are rare, its remapping nowadays and its hard for insurance companies to tell, they would have to RR the car or take the map off the ecu and analyse it. i would not declare a remap tbh, nor a tuning box - just unplug it in the event of a crash

Or just plug a laptop into the diagnostics port in the car and get all this information in like 5 minutes :o

No idea if this is common practice, i'm guessing it depends on how big the claim is? If you crashed into a Porsche garage im sure the insurance company would look for any little thing to not pay out (then the cost would be on you!!).

Sorry, remap then.

If it was remapped before you bought it and you were not informed that it was then would you still end up screwed?

I also believe Para's just sold a car and didn't advertise that it was remapped didn't he?

If they checked it, and you hadn't declared it... yes.

I see what you mean though, if you bought it and didn't know it's pretty unfair. Then again, you can't prove that the previous owner didn't tell you it was remapped, even if it wasn't in the original advert.

the 3rd party always get payed out, but then the insurance company come after you/take you to court

(what i've been told anyway)

When I bought my vRS (last year) it came pre-chipped. Luckily I knew, as Skoda were very honest about it, and I declared it on my insurance.

As said previously, the chances of them checking for a chip, and finding one are very low, so shouldn't be a big deal.

If you knew, or could have reasonably known, that the car was chipped, then insurance policy is likely to be invalid.
