Tried it on a 32inch Sammy at 720p and a 1080p Sony Bravia, doesn't look as nice as VGA on either, no matter what i do with brightness and sharpness levels.
The VGA is the best connection, component is overly sharp too.
My findings exactly.

Yes I think this could be the reason. I may try the 1080p sharp in the living room. Its quite annoying

I find it odd that people prefer hdmi over vga. Isn't hdmi identical to dvi but with sound? So do you guys not use dvi for your pc?

HDMI is perfect on my TV, VGA looks dull compared to the vibrancy of HDMI. Although saying that I spent a good day tweaking my Plasmas HDMI settings.
I see what you’re saying thereDown to preference really everyone’s eyes are different. It’s what looks best to you.
But VGA seems to add an element of 'fuzz' as it where, thus reducing the sharpness and making edges look smoother etc.
VGA seems to soften edges but maintain texture sharpness.
