And I now officially have the finances to go shopping for another car. :D

I'm flapping between a VW Golf 1.8T GTi (around 01/02 plate), or an 01/02 SEAT Leon 20v T Cupra after a lot of eyeing up and a fair bit of reading on here. Cheapest insurance I found was around the grand mark which is factored into the budget anyhow so I'm not that bothered. Any opinions? (Max budget is Car 4500, insurance up to 1300)

Off to check some cars out this week/weekend methinks. I get the feeling that I'm going to have to get one of those Road Angel thingies to bug me though as these will be a bit of a step up from a 1.6 Pug 306 :)

My sister is still pleading with me to get something sensible but I figure I should get something nice while I have the chance :p

a gold and a seat are sensible cars but spending a few grand on it is silly.

Just buy a volvo for £250 on the bay, the 240glt is good, but if your tall get an auto as your leg will scrap the centre console when using the clutch, gets annoying real quick.

both are pretty sensible imho, i would probably go for the VW. Its not a better car but it will be easier to resell and get more respect (for the wrong reasons)

Go the Golf!

what door/colour combo you thinking of then? Is this going to be the first in a long line of GTI's (note the capital I there please...)

ignore volvo recommending trolls as well...

Thanks for the advice, being 6'2", that comes in handy ;)

3 Door in Black, preferably. Even though I get the idea I'm going to have to start making a lot of time to keep it clean (there's always the Kosovan car wash who do a fine job :p)

After spending the weekend with my mum's Toledo, Ive become a massive fan of the V5 lump. Effortless around town and when overtaking thanks to the low-end torque but show it a B-road, let it howl and it becomes rather...Kinky. Yes, it isn't as sharp as some...More dynamically attuned to A-roads but hell...It kept up with my dad's 205 GTi on some white lanes.

Its worse than driving my dads porsche! Tall, cars = *** naff.

ignore the golf/leon recommending trolls, anyone with an ounce of self respect would never get a hatchback for a second car.

Makes a change from the Mondeo and BMW recommendations when the OP hasn't even asked for them :)

Wife has a Leon and its very good IMO. If you intend not to have many passengers I'd go for a 2 door Golf as I think they look very nice in black. If your going to be carrying passengers, I'd go for the Leon Cupra.

You get a fair bit of car buying a Toledo but they aren't the prettiest of cars.

Leon Cupra, beats the golf hands down. More power, 5 doors, nicer interior(in some models). More toys, climate control etc. Go for the cupra.

Clean them up, fit a set of RS6 rims and a healthy tap with the stick and I think they're quite handsome. Certainly not full of flair but nicely understated.

The V5's ability as an allrounder which I hadn't experienced until the weekend has got me seriously looking at them...Perhaps something for when my bonuses and holiday pay come through...

The only thing that swings me toward the Golf is the "prestige" label associated with it and the fact that they hold their value well (not sure about depreciation on the Leons). I only really like the Cupras in Black or Yellow to be honest, any other colour means the back end looks a bit bland to me. Also - is the rear windscreen problematic as far as your view goes, seems a bit awkward (but I guess I'll have to have a sit in one to suss it out).

Cheers

...And that's why they're so overpr...sorry... expensive in the first place ;)

They really aren't "prestige" cars. They're normal everyday cars, just like a Ford, Vauxhall, Toyota, etc etc. They just happen to have pretty decent build quality. If you're really buying the car solely as a status symbol, get a BMW or something :p Otherwise the Leons will generally offer better value for money
