Rock Band or Guitar Hero? AND, which console?

Okay so first off, I'm a musician and a gamer. I play real world guitar and drums and can sing a tune (if that even matters), and also own several recent-ish games consoles (PS2, 360, Wii...) with a possible PS3 purchase sometime in the not-too-distant future.

I've yet to succumb to the bandwagon of the Guitar Hero series, although I have played it a few times with friends (and loved it), because I've been waiting for Rock Band to be released here in the UK. Now that it's out (i think?) I'd love to make a purchase. I am, however, unsure of which game/console direction to go. There's a lot to take into account.

Do I want a guitar game or a multi-instrument game?
Is one brand better than the other?
Which console do I want to buy for, considering some peripherals are wireless, some are not; some work with other consoles (assuming I might buy a PS3 at some point etc), some do not, and so on....

I suppose I should really draw up a pros and cons list, but if anybody has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them. A Wii version would be preferable, as it's in our living room where people could play together, but that's not a pre-requisite. I'd love to be able to play wirelessly, but again, not a dealbreaker... I've also seen GHII packs for PS2 for a knockdown price (probably seeing as the new version is out...) and if people say GH is the way forward (over Rock Band), then I'd be just as happy to play an 'old' version to start with, and then maybe get GHIII in time....

Suggestions?
Comments?
Have at it! :-)

p.s. can I put a poll on this post?

Hmm... so far sounds like people are going with GH... If I were to pick up GH on 360, anybody know if the controllers are useable with Rock Band? I know on some consoles they are not....

Also, I'm pretty sure Rock Band came out here in the UK on Monday? My mate works in Curries and they were selling it...

I doubt that.

gh3 for 360 - wireless controller :)

buy gh2 solus (just the game) for more tunes :)

Spare guitar might be handy too :)

What he said. Buy GHIII and get the wireless guitar then buy GHII solus.
Also get them on the 360 as the guitar will also work on Rock Band when it's released (the PS3 GH guitar doesn't).

Also pick up Boom Boom Rocket (XBLA) it works with the guitar and is more fun than you'd think.

This is what I've done.

I'm waiting for Rock Band myself rather than get GH. The DLC support is better and there not releasing different versions all the time.

yep just been confirmed that no released date for Rock Band over here,

Sorry Europe, still no release date for Rock Band

Electronic Arts UK have said that they still do not have a confirmed release date for the European release of Rock Band. EA did however say that they will make some kind of announcement soon.

News Source: videogamer.com

we will get Guitar Hero: Aerosmith edition before we will see Rock Band here, lol

Please tell me you're not going to buy that  lol

There have been a few teasers for Rock Band on the EU MS dashboard of late, and it also appeared at the UK ****.*** award event so I'm hoping this means that it'll soon become a reality.

Hahah sorry guys, turns out my friend was muchos mistaken, and the pack I saw was in an import store in town! :-D Me and my memory...

Well it looks like the general consensus is get GH2 or 3 on 360 for wireless and future RB compatibility and then wait for RB to come out.... Sounds like a plan!! Thanks guys!!
