If so, who do you use?

i've never had to take out insurance before, there must be student-specific offers so im interested to see how much you guys pay

The one offerred with my HSBC student current account.

Am currently paying £37 per year but that only covers upto £3000 with £500 single article limit.

The house I'm living in with my landlord is also insured.

when I was a student I never bothered,, but its a bit different these days all the fancy white good that you can have...all I had was a ghetto blaster and a 386 DX....

if you prize it, protect it.!

bullit

Yes, Saxon. £40-50. An additional £5/10 for laptop anywhere in the country. Reasonable price to pay for peace of mind.

I have mine with Endsleigh. I think mine cost me about £80 at the beginning of the year covering most of my stuff, although it needs updating since I've brought some expensive things that could do with covering.

Pretty good, although saying that I haven't had to make a claim yet *touch wood*.

I have Endsleigh student insurance. Paid an extra £30 or so to cover my mountain bike as well. I think it's ~£50 annually.

edit: check if your parents' house insurance covers you, sometimes it does apparently

edit: BUSH beat me

for a whole year? thats sounds really good

does it cover accidental damage? my plasma might get wrecked at a party :(

That isn't very good insurance surely? What happens if your laptop gets stolen? Only £500 for a new one isn't going to fill the void very sufficiently.

No it's not a very good one but it was sufficient when I first joined in my 1st year as I only had a crappy laptop that I wasn't going to take anywhere. Although my current laptop still costs less than £500 it's still useless if the laptop is stolen outside the house. Not to mention the desktop I have now as well... But it's too late to update my policy now as it's nearly the end of my final year but if anything happens my landlord is happy for me to make a claim through his insurance.

I've never taken any in the last 3 years and don't intend to for the remaining 3 years either. Not sure I've much to steal really and it's very expensive!

I have cover that iirc is part of my parents home contents insurance that my dad reckoned was cheaper than anything else.

yep ,phoned up about my daughter in Bangor and shes covered on the home policy with no extra charge (laptop included) worth looking into
Also a tv powered by its own internal battery is covered on our tv licence (sorry off subject a bit)

Whilst you might be covered by your parents' insurance, the chances are that won't cover stuff like open door thefts etc. Check the small print before deciding to go for that option.

I personally recommend Saxon. Their prices are good, plus I've claimed from them before - it really was no hassle and they settle in cash, rather than in vouchers/replacement goods.

Check on your parents' house insurance. I had Ensleigh insurance for a couple of years, which was great for when my phone broke, however I realised that actually I wasn't properly covered for things like my CDs (£500 doesn't go a long way). The folks' house insurance offered a much better level of cover.

The only thing to check is whether it covers locked doors etc. Ensleigh is very leniant, my current cover is not. Not a massive problem for me really, but it might be for others.

When i lived in my uni accomodation they provided free contents insurance for the halls. My mates who live in their own housing would be stupid not to really, it is Salford after all.

My sister is covered under my mum's insurance (maybe endsleigh but not too sure) over in Bristol, staying in student accommodation.

Her bf also has insurance, and has needed it as his student house got broken into a few weeks ago, had his very new Macbook stolen and a load of other things from all the other rooms got stolen. Was ridiculous really as there is usually at least one person in the house and on this one occasion it was empty for a couple of hours.

I've had insurance since I moved into my flat, I didn't bother in halls. I don't know who it's with or how much it cost though, as my mum sorts that stuff out with the mortgage :p.
