Can anybody recommend a decent digital wireless house phone system? I am looking for one with 4 headsets to connect to a BT line. Would like to have an answerphone built in and address book with caller display and all the usual features.

The main thing is that the range and quality of the line must be good. I currently have a BT Synergy but the quality of the line is awful, there is a permenant hissing and it is difficult to be heard by the caller.

just looking at BT phones, i think the main choices with answering machine built in, and sold as a set of 4 headsets are:

BT Verve 500 Quad
BT Freestyle 250 Quad
BT Synergy 4500 Quad
BT Freestyle 350 Quad

The above are not in any particular order and i don't know which are good or not, just search for some reviews, you should be able to find something.

I had a set of synergy's and they had the same problem you experienced. I swapped them for a set of Panasonic 8220's (quad set, around £170). Much better clarity, better battery life, better build quality and better answerphone. Highly recommend them.
