SG-1 the series got just as ridiculous in the last few seasons, particularly when Richard Dean Anderson (O'neil) left the show. I still watch it though, in fact I've seen every single episode of SG-1 and SG-A.
Personally I think they have mucked up big time on the Ark of Truth. It feels like a B movie with terrible production values. Yes SG-1 works on TV but they can't expect to just roll the same format into a movie.
There was talk a few years ago from the directors that a script for a blockbuster Stargate movie sequel was in the works. The plans however fell through and it was instead rolled into a two part episode for the series which turned out to be the one where they discover the ancient facility in the Antartic and there is a massive battle with the Goa'uld and O'neil gets frozen in a cryo chamber. There was also a couple episodes before that were leading it up to it (i.e. when they capture an ancient device from a bunch of Goa'uld terrorists in the Columbian jungle) which would have made a good opening sequence for a movie... THAT would have made a good blockbuster movie. The Ark of Truth comes no where near close
The whole Ori story arc is just terrible IMO. It is just a rehash of the Goa'uld story arc but designed to capture new viewers but alienate the long term fans. It's just complete ******** and has tainted the last few series of SG-1 IMO.
I really hope the next one, Continuum, is better. It needs to have a solid story line involving the Goa'uld and higher production values IMO. NOT anything to do with niché story arcs like the Replicators or Ori. Those are small fry compared to all of the heritage behind the Goa'uld built up in the first movie and the series.
Why have MGM backed Stargate for so many years then at the last hurdle where the franchise is in desperate need of some revival they appear to have just given up almost
