Hi all,

My sister has a panasonic viera tx32lxd600. At the moment she is using an xbox with xbmc to play divx files and dvd's. They are also using the built in freeview.

What would be the best thing to improve the picture quality?

Would something that plays x264 files be good? or is that no real biggie?

A friend has a Helios X3000 for sale. Is that something that would be a good buy?

I dont really have a clue about all this.

Thanks in advance

I know, I posted it, I guess it got deleted by a Don, for what im not to sure. so if I mentioned anything I shouldnt of SORRY! :-)

Basically I said I use my 360 to stream, it does it all very nicely in HD

You could get a 360 (£160 for the cheap version), which would allow her to keep playing DivX (most versions), and DVD (upscaled if using HDMI).
Of a PS3 which would allow DivX (some versions), DVD upscaled, and BluRay.

Either of them you can also stream from a PC any other media which needs to be transcoded.

I've not heard of the Helios before, but I have found it only upscales to 1080i max, rather than the 1080p the consoles can do.
Plus you would have to burn media onto a DVD or stream across the network, whereas both consoles will play from USB memory stick.

As a cheap upgrade you could try the component cable fot the xbox, when I upgraded this noticed everything looked much better.

Will have a look at the formats that the 360 can play.

The tele is a 720p, so 1080p isnt nessecary anyway.

Seeing as she's got an HD screen, surely SkyHD or a Blu Ray player is a must purchase?

They don't want sky, and are unlikely to be purchasing blueray disks.

I just wondered if a new player was on the cards (a Helios), you might as well put the extra in and go proper high definition, instead of upscaled standard def. I suppose though that this doesn't help with her current DVD catalogue!

Chances are they wont be upgrading for a long time to come, so not much point, but thanks for the comments :)
