Great:mad::mad:

Just tried to play a game and found my launch PS3 UK 60GB bluray drive has stopped working. Will spin any disc (DVD,Bluray Movie/game or PS2 game) but will not launch it at all or appear in the XMB.

Found this thread on the offical PS3 forums and looks like a bunch of launch PS3's are having this problem. Not happy as Sony apparently give you a refurb model and do not repair yours. Well I am not prepared to accept that as the reason I paid a lot of money for mine was so that I could also retain PS2 compatibility well guess what Sony send a courier to your door with a replacement which is nice but they do not want to wait for the HD to be swopped out and you are not guaranteed to get a like for like replacement as the 60GB models are EOL so pot luck what you get. Guess that build quality vs the 360 is not so good after all:(:(

I think it's usually the laser that fails... been the same since the PS1 days.

If you're technically minded, you could just buy a new laser and fit it yourself... im sure i saw a post on here from somebody who fixed his own.

I have been thinking about this, blu-ray is new tech and its the first revision so who knows if they are built to last.

I'm surprised that the lasers are failing this soon (I would have thought Sony would have tried to get them to last as long as possible), if it becomes too common Sony are going to face a backlash from early adopters who may end up without backwards compatibility, especially if they bought extended guarantees that were meant to replace like for like or repair.

I'm even more surprised that Sony don't keep a stock of the older model for warranty repairs so they can guarantee a like for like replacement.

I hate to say it, but it reinforces my believe that consoles don't really make great DVD/HD/BR playback devices.

Great its just out of warranty (arrived 23rd March 07) so have to order the replacement and fit myself. £40 for a new lens assembly with next day shipping.

At least I keep my 60GB model!!

Think when it fails is due to how much use you have had from new. I have not extensively played mine only now and again as the decent games are still hard to find.

Just found a whole bunch of other EU launch day users getting the problem back in Nov 07. For me all I did was download the Motorstorm update then the drive started to click and the PS3 locked up so had to power off and back on again then backed up my saves and reformated and restored the OS but makes no difference the Bluray drive is totally broken.

No one I can find has managed to get their PS3 working again after it stops reading discs so do not bother wiping your OS as it is a waste of time (although Sony will ask you to-just lie!!).

Have to wonder if Sony choose to ignore this issue in the EU launch machines ad hope for the best as I understand that the bluray diode is very close to the disc and if they make contact it can damage the diode but not the Bluray! This same bluray diode was the main reason Sony gave for the lengthy delays in releasing the PS3 as they cited manufacturing issues around this diode. If this fault becomes more common Sony will take a big financial hit. Not many consumers will be happy to buy a £40 part out of warranty.

did you register your PS3 online ?, if not you can do it now, they give you a 6 month leeway from the manufacturer date so register and put down the purchase date as a month after the manufacturer date.

lol love the sensationalist thread title.. *my* PS3 has failed therefore ALL launch ones must be!

Had a quick skim of that thread you linked to and it seems the majority of people with issues are ones who have bought 40gb models, not launch day 60gb ones - it's been discussed before that there are quality control issues with some of the 40's...

I'd contact Sony before trying to repair it yourself, even if you do get a refurb you should still get a model with all the features of your 60gb and you'll get it within a few days. If you talk to them it should be no problem that its only a few days outside warranty.

Sony support is fantastic. I had an expensive CRT monitor from sony years ago. It was a year out of warranty and it broke. Phoned them up and explained the situation, the said "Don't worry Sir we are Sony we will send you a refurbished model". It arrived within 48 hours.

Extremely happy with Sony.

I think if you phoned up sony they would be reasonable enough and repaired the unit for free, considering it only a week out of warranty.

Mine is being replaced today, will be getting a refurbed unit of the same age and model. So 60gb for 60gb. Dont know why you'd be bothered about keeping the same one tbh.

wait.. the serial number would be different! shock horror!
lmao

on a side note. sony will swap out next day, better than microsoft taking 3-4 weeks to "repair" their units.

This is stupidly hyped up. Just because yours failed and you've found a bunch of other failures it doesnt mean Sony have a big issue on thier hands. And it certainly cant be compared with launch 360's.

You've had a failure out of warranty - so what
