Great! Launch PS3's Bluray Drives Now Failing!!

My friends broke about 6months ago. Took it to where he bought it from and got a replacement. Guess that is more difficult now as they won't have the 60Gb versions on the shelf

Mine is running sweet as a nut (launch day 60GB), and have used it extensively.

If it does fail then I'd want a like-for-like model, there's no way I'd accept a 40GB stripped-down version as that's not what I bought.

I'm sure if this was to become such a problem, then Sony will extend their warranty period like MS did. Either way i'm not worried about it yet. When i see 5 threads a day on here about peoples breaking, like we did with 360 owners. Then i'll worry ;)

Great:mad::mad:

Just tried to play a game and found my launch PS3 UK 60GB bluray drive has stopped working. Will spin any disc (DVD,Bluray Movie/game or PS2 game) but will not launch it at all or appear in the XMB.

Found this thread on the offical PS3 forums and looks like a bunch of launch PS3's are having this problem. Not happy as Sony apparently give you a refurb model and do not repair yours. Well I am not prepared to accept that as the reason I paid a lot of money for mine was so that I could also retain PS2 compatibility well guess what Sony send a courier to your door with a replacement which is nice but they do not want to wait for the HD to be swopped out and you are not guaranteed to get a like for like replacement as the 60GB models are EOL so pot luck what you get. Guess that build quality vs the 360 is not so good after all:(:(

lol just calm down a bit, you're getting way over excited over nothing. You get a like-for-like exchange, they'll give you a 60GB back. A laser fault is hardly classed as 'build quality' and comparing it to the all the 360's problems is stupid. You really expect a courier to turn up and stand there and wait while you mess around un-screwing HDD's and stuff?

I have just swapped out a psp which is out of warranty, broken umd, smashed front and won't switch on, cost me £25 and I get a refurb straight from Sony to my door with a new battery and charger. In other words, stop panicking, there are still options out of warranty :)

In my life I've had 1 PS1 (launch unit), 1 PS2 (launch unit) and 1 PS3.
None have failed, regardless of the years of use.

Therefore....

PLAYSTATIONS NEVER EVER FAIL AND WILL LIVE FOREVER!
Because a statistic of one is clearly valid.

just found this on another forum from back in january, interesting if true and would answer why they replaced mine out of warranty.

Sony will replace out of warranty/faulty PS3's and PSP's for free!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just been reading on another forum that Sony has now decided it will replace faulty/out of warranty PS3's and PSP's (even with a broken LCD screen).

The only thing they ask is the warranty sticker is still intact.

Not tried it myself but if anyone needs to, give it a whirl.

If you check the figures from ps3forums: http://www.ps3forums.com/poll.php?do=showresults&pollid=3924

Out of 986 consoles 130 have failed. That's a 13.2% failure rate.

Most people only visit forums when something borks. That is a FACT.

Your PS3 breaks so you google Broken PS3 drive and visit the first forum you see for advice.

I wouldn't go near most forums unless something was broken.

Therefore it stands to reason that figure is high.

I did quality control course in college and even with strigent controls and post production testing you cannot get higher than 97% quality rating. Meaning 3% of your products will have faults. This could mean a screw loose or something worse, however you are quoting a totally false percentage there.

It's a piece of electronic equipment with advanced tech some will fail I think it's more important to note a company's method of dealing with the failures than to dwell on failure rates that only SONY could know.

To register a vote on that forum you have to be registered; it's not a poll open to the public.
It's on a Pro PS3 site so if anything you'd expect the poll to be skewed in the PS3's favour.
1000 votes is a pretty large sample.

The only conclusion I draw is that PS3s are failing in larger quantities than they should. I see as many, if not more my PS3 is failing threads on these very boards as 360 ones and this poll lends credence to that observation.

I'm not criticising the PS3 just pointing out that it might not be as reliable as is being touted.

The only conclusion you should draw is that it's impossible to tell exactly what percentage of consoles fail, be it Sony or Microsoft. Therefore, making any judgement on acceptable quantities is null and void.

If it fails it fails.

That's the exact motto I use. Worrying about something will do nothing, complaining about something after it's broken will do nothing either.

I've had both my PS3 and Xbox360 fail and have had both replaced. If they fail again, I'll do the same.

Out of interest, did the PS2 Slimline console improve the laser problem or did they fail just as bad? What about other sony products, dvd players, car audio, are they as bad?

Didn't we have a similar poll on this site (a pro 360 site that requires registration to vote) and the 360 was in the 40% region? I think people were unwilling to draw conclusions from that. At that time people rubbished it and said that forum polls are not really valid for various reasons (already mentioned in last few posts above).

Also recently there was a hardware repair company that did a poll of 360s and ps3s and they had a larger sample, and people rubbished that too. Whilst I like statistics as much as the next man, these straw polls on forums are quite selective.

All we can assume is the failure rate of ps3s is no longer the <1.5% (approximate figure released by Sony themselves not some rubbish internet poll) it was and that the 360 is no longer >30% (approximate figure conceded by Microsoft). As I often say, if the ps3 is now 5 times less reliable than it was and the 360 is 5 times more reliable than it was, then there is still a big difference (just in answer to the OPs implied point that the rates of failing 360s and ps3 can be compared, I don't think they can tbh).

My mate works in the purple shirt store at weekends and he said last weekend they had 15 360s returned as faulty and 4 ps3s returned as faulty. But this means nothing really.

PS2 slimline was a lot better. The PS2 wasn't all that bad, I think it's been exaggerated if I'm being honest, there was a bad batch at launch where a certain percentage would destroy whatever disc was in the drive. I had one of those.

I've never had that many Sony DVD players, I've always opted for better Pioneer ones, but from those I've used I've not noticed any problems. I have heard of problems with car CD players though.

Don't rolleye me without explaining. What you quoted before in regards to Abooie was correct, so what's your problem with it. Is it because it's against your darling Sony machine?
Shoe's been on the other foot for a long time with yourself though hasn't it, but of course there were no problems with that?

Leave me alone Nokkon and go bully someone else with your senseless tripe.

Stop trolling sunshine, I'm sick of your posts featuring no facts, devoid of open opinion and heavily based in bias. You're bad mouthing figures because they're in opposition to the PS3, but you've banded around 'statistics' from other sites against Xbox360, so not only are you a troll, but a hypocrite too.
You should start putting together some decent posts and stop being a drain on consoles.

Nanoman has turned it around and put some great posts together recently, I'm sure you could make the same effort.

I had the hard drive fail on the 60gig version though the rest of the components work fine. In my case it's seagate's fault rather than sony's. I'm impressed with the customer service though, agreeing to replace it on the doorstep.

Either way these things happen I still have my launch ps2 working reasonably well bar an odd clicking noise increasing the bootup time but it works.

You've postsed some really nasty personal comments there Nokkon - but let me tell ya - I'm not taking the bait.

I know that what you say is not correct and my post history supports that.

Just because you said it doesnt make it true.

Now stop it Nokkon and move on - please.
