Hi all, new to OCUK and was hoping for a little seasoned advice and opinion.

I upgraded my PC a few months ago, to run a Q6600 but was on a budget. At the time I had 2 7900GTX's in SLi so to save money I decided that they'd keep me happy for a few more months.

Just got my Xmas bonus and have roughly £600 solely for GFX. You'd think I would be rubbing my hands with glee, but I've been reading up on the latest cards and am a little disappointed with what's around at the moment. From what I can tell the top end cards (9800GX2 and HD3870X2) aren't that much of an upgrade over the 8800 series that have ruled for so long. The mid-range cards (8800GT/S and 9600GT) are an option as they do seem to offer relatively good performance for price. Finally, there is the 9800GTX due shortly, but if popular rumour is to be believed it's just an OC'd 8800GTS.

If I buy now and in 6-8 months the so called next-gen cards are released and blow everything else out of the water, am I not going to be cursing?

I beg of you, tell me how to spend my money?!?!

Best way to spend that money would arguably to get a pair of 8800GTX in SLI and stick the remaining £210 in savings until something better comes out.

Well the performance of my current cards is pretty poor, in CoD4 at 1680x1050 with any amount of AA/AF I'm lucky to get 30 fps...

Waiting is killing me and the cash is burnin a hole in my pocket!

Think I would see much improvement with just a single 8800GT?

Wait for what?

How will he play games?

The waiting game is Futile in PC tech.

The OP games at 1680x1050 so he hardly needs to spend 600 on GFX.

The GX2 will allow max AA and AF at that res.

The X2 the same

Its not rocket science.

im gonna get a second gts 512 shortyl fancy trying sli (won a few quid on the horses) and maybe add a q6600 into the mix, ive had the e6600 for 8 months now and its been a fantastic cpu, runs @3.6 24/7 on air ive had it up to 3.7 for a bit of benching and its as stable as a rock, bit greedy voltage wise, but i dont mind if it shortens its life, ill hardly have it for to long:)

i agree, get a "proper" next gen card when they are released, these 9 seires cards aren't worth the price for performance atm, perhaps buy a 8800GTS512 or GT to tie you over/ May only be a few months (3-5) before they start releasing some newer graphics cards.

Gonna go by this reasoning as it makes the most sense to me. 2 x 8800 GTS in SLi puts me at around £350. I can also buy myself a nice new 1000W modular new power supply too, this way I'll be ready for power needs of the next gen cards.

Many thanks for the input everyone :D

Don't bother with two
I got one and it runs everything perfect 1680 1050. and everything bar crysis with some sort of aa got 4xaa in cod4 atm
the second one would be a waste
