Need a car pretty sharpish as my old 306's engine is on its way out. :(

I can only afford tops £1500 currently and a car is pretty essiential to me for work with a 60 mile round trip each week day.

Can anyone recommend me any good makes and years that will fall into that bracket, smallish, good mileage and importantly AUTO transmission?

Any advice much appreciated.

mondeo autos are crap dont they break a lot?

For Truth.
Ford make the worst Auto boxes in the Entire Universe, Complete pap.
I have no experience with Autos but I have enough experience to post making sure you don't buy a Ford Auto.

id say a mondeo too, can pick some bargain mk2's up now.

:p Sorry mate but you can't post rubbish like that as advice.
For starters I'd get a late shape Mondy for 1500 quid no messing & you recommend a Mk2. On top of that you recommend a notoriously crap Auto.
If i do one thing today it will be stop this dude from buying a Ford Auto.

Golf 1.9TDi can be had for that money, 110bhp engine that's good for 45-50mpg, not the most sluggish thing you can buy. In auto form you're going to be struggling for choice really but add in the Passat and Audi A4 for a few more options.

Passat has to be a good suggestion in my opinion. Great cars & well undervalued in the 2nd hand market. I've had Golf Autos with 150k on them as well.

Personally my purchase would be based on the engine and reliability of the auto box. Therefore I don't know as I have no idea what auto boxes are ok in small cars.

I'd look for an e36 318i auto, not many tend to end up in the hands of chavs as they don't like the 'box.

£1500 should bag a very nice example.

My last 318i I bought @ 125k miles & sold on @ 175k, cheap to run, insure, well built with a good chassis. :)

The gearboxes are a lot stronger than the "sealed for life" examples found in the 5 & 7 Series.

These are all going to be rubbish at this price level

I would be quite liking this option personally if the car was for my fleet.

maybe a volvo of some kind? The auto's are pretty good, they are very comfortable and they are usually very reliable.
