Downloading???

Depends in what context you mean? Downloading say a driver .exe from a random website should not be affected by such a thing, however, some download manager programs, in particular torrents, increase your download speed if you allow uploading to take place at the same time.

Not the amount you upload, but the speed at which you are uploading will have an effect on your download speed and vise-versa.

Torrent basics..

Or so I'm told,

If you set your uploading to max it will not allow you to download at full speed which sucks !

Its to do with the connection though, not the program

Of course it's the connection, there is only so much bandwidth that can come down/go up your "pipe"

You can't use your max upload speed and max download speed at the same time.

And if you think that an 8MB ADSL Annex-A line is "maxed out" when running at full 448kbps upstream, and whatever your line gets downstream (usually less than 7mbps), then you are sadly mistaken.

Annex-M on the other hand is slightly different, as you sacrafice some of your 24mbps downstream for a greater (up to 2.5mbps) upstream.

Generally, the faster you upload using the bittorent protocol, the faster the download speed (depends on other factors too).

But if you max out your upload bandwidth, it will adversly affect your download speed because you need to send acknowledgement (ACK) packets to indicate receipt of the download packets.

The typical recommendation is to set your bittorent client to use 80% of your maximum upload bandwidth.

Does the amount you upload affect the speed you download?...

Depends what you mean?

You cannot download at full line speed if your uploading as fast as your connection allows as your broadband line is a set size (not x amount download + x amount upload).

So *if* you had a 1:1 upload/download ratio on a 1mb line and you where uploading at say 0.5mbps then you would only be able to download at 0.5mpbs (very roughly).

And what is this in GD? Network sub forum would be better no?
