Basically for the last 3 years I have been on a BR tax code, and not really noticed it until recently due to not being particularly savvy about that sort of thing. It was obviously my fault for not submitting all of my P45's in to my new workplace when I switched jobs, but the result has more than made up for it... £800 back for 2005/2006, and still due a lump sum for 2006/2007, which should mean another £800 at leat, probably more like a grand. That'll do nicely for my laser eye surgery soon then. :D

The irony is that I find it VERY hard to save as I tend to spend lots on clothes, computer, going out etc and to think that all I need to do is just put away a little more per month and I wouldn't even notice it (like has been happening due to the wrong tax code) has really made me re-think my financial strategy and kick myself for not being a bit more attentive in that area.

Anyone else due any nice little windfalls? :)

How do I find out if I am due any? One of my wages is on a BR code (I do the same job but payment comes from 2 different places)

Ok, if you're on (or were on) a BR tax code then you simply need to call HM Revenue & Customs on 0845 3000627 and explain to then that you are (were) on the BR code and the periods you were on it and they will then either ask you to send any P45's you have lying around, or if they have what they need they will calculate it for you over the next couple of weeks and then notify you by post of what you're due back, hopefully accompanied by a nice cheque! Bear in mind if you work two jobs you are put on a BR tax code... but if you have only one job and you're on it then you're almost certainly getting taxed too much. At least that's what i've gathered. :)

I do the same job, but most of my hours are paid by the education authority, and any extra hours I do outside of "school hours" are paid by social services, its the same job though. Mine doesnt count as a second job, just paid by a different organisation.

I once got paid nearly a grand one week :D for the same reason as you. Was on emergency tax code for a working year. Was a nice surprise.

Was yours out of the blue then? You must have been jumping for joy over that!:D

Then give 'em a ring knipster! :)

As he's earning from two employers, as long as the one with the standard code is earning more than £7,355 per year (personal allowance + starting rate), then the BR code will be deducting the right amount of tax (assuming he's not a HR tax payer).

Ahhhh so it could be correct that one of knips 'slips is a BR then despite being for the same job?

She :D

Im sure it is all in order, I just might give them a ring to check.

Because most of my salary is earned working abroad, I'm not obliged to pay any national insurance. You pay for the first year you're working abroad and then you don't have to pay anything if you don't want to (you can pay a minimum (about £2 a week) to keep your benefit/pension entitlement up to date) after that.

I had been working abroad for nearly 2 years when some eagle-eyed person in the wages department unearthed this gem. I got refunded the best part of a years NI contributions - over £2000

I had about £350 back around 6 weeks ago for 05/06 which was nice and very unexpected!
