Hi chaps,

Due to a merger at work (with no prior warning), my career path of managing/sales is going to be non-existent, so am thinking of making a change to a larger established company, who can give training and benefits.

I have retail and some management experience and am currently in IT but am open to other sectors.

I heard that firms such as Tesco and Virgin are one of the better ones to work for and can give full training and a good path to follow.

Does anyone work for these or someone similar and can give their experience or advice? Ultimately I would like to manage my own store but know this would be some years away ;)

Thanks :)

I'm currently on a managerial course with a supermarket, and really enjoying it. My overall goal is of course, to manage my own store one day, and it would appear that the company I work for (Co-op) are big on giving young people managerial training.

My training is basically a massive workbook of things, ranging from prioritising tasks, to coaching other members of staff on something, learning how to run the store on my own, etc.

I started off as a general shop assistant when I started there 18 months ago, and was offered the chance at management training last September. I was only part-time to begin with, but showed that I was keen to learn more, and take on more hours, as I was quite flexible, and that's quite an important thing when taking on management responsibilites, as you never know when you'll be needed!

If you're looking at getting started in it, then a larger store probably isn't a good idea. It will be very hectic, so start small and work your way up, taking the opportunities if they arise! :)

Thanks for the info. I don't have a degree but will take a look in general anyway.
