Buying an air rifle

Was also going to elaborate on my first post. For plinking I'd go for a .22, as quite simply it makes bigger holes, but importantly it doesnt have the penetration of a .177, which means its easier to create a backstop for it. However, if you're likely to start shooting field target (or possibly hunting), i'd go for a .177 as it has a flatter trajectory. If you're only going to be shooting in a garden, the trajectory wont matter (unless your garden is 35+ yards long!).

Please bear in mind, and i'm not being patronising, that an air rifle is a lethal weapon. Be responsible with it. Make sure you have a good backstop and that your garden is suitable for shooting. For example, my garden isnt' because it backs onto 2 other gardens - should there be an accidental discharge, there would be a high risk of a stray shot ending up in someones garden - this is unacceptable, or obvious reasons!

I agree, too much hassle for a bit of an ass about. Saying that though, I've had spring guns for years and I'm itching for a precharge now just for the sake of it, dont know if thats just money burning a hole in my pocket though. :(

Precharges are good fun, but the associated cost is probably too much unless you're a regular shooter. Its not just buying the kit (like an air bottle), but also the services too (IIRC every 2 years for a bottle, and if it fails they return it to you with a big hole drilled in it!)

I'm a regular shooter ye, I've been looking at the BSA Hornet/Ultra for a few years, just biting the bullet and forking the cash out.

I sell them for a living...

Do you sell airsoft guns too?
I've been looking at getting a JG BAR-10 for a bit of a hoot. £100, 500fps with a slight mod, pretty damnaccurate for an airsoft gun and no risk of the police taking you for a trip to the station if they find you in the woods shooting at your mate.

Yep :) Mainly Webley ones though.

The police should take your name and address if you're caught with one, just like they have to have it when you buy one. Shouldnt get carted off though aye :)

I didn't think they needed your name if you were buying a two-tone?
Can you get hold of the JG BAR 10's ?

Don't know, never heard of one, I'll have a look in one of the catalogues later.

Edit: Just googled, one of thooooosee! I expect so yes, like i say I'll look at prices later

target shooters you'll be best off with a .177 under or sidelever, they are generally more accurate, with decent pellets (see what works best, see if dirty or clean barrells work best with your rifle), you can go into pcp rifles if you are talking proper match target shooting with diopter sights and the like but i wouldn't of thought thats what you want.
I'll always say i prefer pcp for accuracy but spring feels great.

Generally, i always say germans do the best air rifles.
After ww2 they weren't allowed to manufacture anything with a cartridge so they worked on air rifles a great deal instead. Something someone once told me i've always found it's true too german air rifles are brilliant.

Whilst I loved my old Air Arms when i shot Field Target, I always found shooting a precharged rifle a little detatched

When did you do FT? Did you do many national events, (Newbury, Weston Park etc)?

I did full-on FT between April 2000 and August 2004 (I sold my Ripleys when I took up singing) and wondered if we might perhaps know each other?

Thanks mate.
I've heard they're really good for the money and if you shorten the air brake and do the "teflon mod" they're good for 540+ fps...not bad for a pea shooter :)

"Stephan Boles shot this HUGE bison from 53 yards."

He shot something the size of a small car at 53 Yards? What's the point?

Because it was killed with an Air Rifle.

Its some feat to kill an animal that size with what amounts to little more than an over grown pea shooter.

I didn't do a national one, but I shot for South East England the last year i did it. Must've been '98-99, as i found girls soon after (I was only 15) and that pretty much ended my FT interest! A pity really, as I was a good shot - I used to beat most of the older members with my £350 Air Arms 100 Series (verses their GC's/RN10s etc :D). Part of me would like to take it up again (it's a superb discipline), but part of me would also like to take up full bore target. I'm a history buff you see, so i love the idea of taking the Lee Enfield No4 out for some time on the range!

My hero....not.

What a tool, "ZOMGS I KILLED DIS WIV MA AIR GUN WEWT!".

I'd give him kudos if he took it down with a pen knife, but at the end of the day what is the point in the mindless killing? I mean genuinely, what do you get from ending the life of another living creature? I honestly can't quite grasp the concept.
