Recorded Spam telephone calls

Hi guys,

Anyone else had this? Despite being registered with the TPS, twice now in the last week I've answered the phone only to find a recorded 'National Awareness Message' playing at me down the phone informing of a 'Little known proceedure' which can be used to reduce debt. Clearly commercial spam but the message is about 60 seconds long and then prompts you to Press 5 to speak to an agent (Which of course, I won't do).

I wouldn't mind as much but if you hang up as soon as it starts the phone is of course still connected as the wonderful way landlines work is such that only the iniator of the call can terminate it - today I hung up, picked the phone up 20 seconds later to make a call myself and up - the message was still there playing and I had to listen to it before I could use the phone!

Has anyone else had this and do you know which company its for?

I don't know but I do know that like you I am getting an increase in Spam Phone Calls despite being registered on the TPS. If they aren't automated I usually (mostly politely) tell them so and not to ring again.

It is always bloody tea time as well.

Perhaps wait, speak to the operator, and tell them that if you get anymore of these unwanted phone calls, you'll be complaining to OFCOM. I'm sure they must have the power to regulate things like this.

You cant speak to an operator unless you press 5 which I am loathe to do. With the exception of this we literally get nil other spam calls.

My house landline gets loads of these annoying recorded messages, indian call-centre workers called "Dave" and people who have misdialled the number for a local hospital cancer charity. For some reason using the phone disconnects the broadband connection as well .

It does also take some time for the TPS service to kick in, it's a few weeks from memory. Hopefully you should notice a difference soon.

Alternatively, as mentioned, chase the TPS and see what's happening.

Well, if you don't want to speak to them, then jsut complain straight away. But it seems if you have to wait around to sue the phone anyway, may as well get onto them and tell them to stop. Seems to be the easiest thing to do.

We've had a few of these over the last fortnight and someone else at work has so it looks like there's a bit of a situation developing here. I don't know if you've noticed but the caller ID comes up as International so I reckon you'd be paying a hefty premium if you did hit 5. If it carries on I'm going to speak to BT but as so many people are experiencing it I suspect they may know about it.

I've had two of these in the last couple of weeks, and I've been with the TPS for years now, not sure what to do about it.

We have a panasonic switchboard in our house (1/2 the house is used for business) so I don't suffer the line grab problem.

It is annoying, especially on Sunday afternoons or later lunch.

Nope never had that, but I usually just hang up as soon as I know its advertising anyways.

You didn't read the whole post did you? ;)

I find these intrusions into my life more and more annoying, why do people think if they keep badgering me i will eventually give up and say yes in fact i do want your crappy refinancing, your obviously the guys to sort out my long term financial future!!!

While i'm having a rant a may as well mention how annoying adverts on the tele are, surely there has to be some rules regarding sound levels, why do they make them at such an increased volume, i have to turn the tele down everytime an ad break comes on. Im sure they didnt do this a few years ago.

As Burnsy says, TPS covers organisations doing business in the UK, but they say themselves that prosecuting companies based overseas is difficult.

Another scam we get at home is from companies who say they're doing "market research". You just know that they want to then try to flog you something at the end.

As for the adverts, this is supposed to be closely monitored and regulated by the ASA, but all I can say is that they must be deaf to not have noticed that the volume increases at the start of the commercial breaks. Maybe they do it to wake people up that have fallen asleep during the boring programmes they show in between each break.
