Glasgow man is jailed after retaliating against knife thug

I always find it ironic that those who are so vocal about what should be done to criminals seem to share their thought processes much of the time.

I can assure you that I do not share any of their thought process, I am for firm and swift punishment, preferably capital. ;)

Neither are 99% of judges, but they still decide...

However in this country they thankfully don't get to end peoples lives. Is there any particular reason why you think judges unsuitable for their job? Given that most have got decades worth of legal practice behind them and have been given the job on the basis that they actually know something about the law.

You are thinking the man Martin killed was innocent, he wasn't!

Erm, where did I say that? Nice and incorrect assumption there, good job pal.

The man he killed wasn't innocent, and he deserved a fair punishment for his crime carried out by someone other than the victim. He didn't deserve to be shot on sight. I don't see why you think death is a fair punishment for robbery. I don't think chavs should run around causing problems, they should be arrested for whatever crimes they commit and have a prison sentence if applicable, we shouldn't arm random people who think they have the birth right of taking other people lives a fair punishment for robbery.

They may know something about the law, but how many times have you read a news article about a case and the person has got off lightly.. too many times. The case the OP linked to is a prime example if you ask me.

I'm talking about blatant disregard to the rights of anyone other than yourself. You're showing that just fine, you just want your ideal behaviour legalised.

I didn't say that either.

I don't think people should just shoot other people if they annoy them, but you should have the absolute right to defend you, yours and your property without reprisal.

The right to defend your property by any means legalised, damn straight I do, so should you.

Why would I argue for the right to use disproportionate violence just because you have no respect for the rights of others (which is also the problem criminals have).

We have the right to defend our property using proportionate force already, you want the right to punish people, not the right to defend.

You wanted the man to get more than 3 years and 8 months? I'm assuming not although that is how it reads.

You generally hear about cases where people think the judges have got it wrong, they are a miniscule portion of the total number of cases processed by the British Judicial System every day, week, month or year. No matter which metric you choose to use the proportion of correctly decided cases significantly outweighs the mistakes.

You should be able to defend yourself from harm, and stop people from taking your property. But killing someone for taking your things isn't fair now is it really. Death sentence for murder etc although I'm against it may be "fair" in a sense, but I don't think it's fair to take someone's life for taking your property.

Yes.

Do you think we should all be allowed to deal our own punishments as we see fit?

Not all of us no - but if the police are powerless to help, the judicial system is a joke and our judges are so far out of touch with life in the real world who can blame them for dealing their own form of punishment?

My guess is that the guy was so sick of the countries legal system he decided the only justice that's left is by taking things into his own hands.

Morally, hell yeah he did the right thing. A little **** who is carrying a baton, a big knife and threatening to stab me in front of my kids definately deserves a time in hospital to reflect.

Legally, he retaliated to the ****, which in the eyes of the law, is almost as bad. Hopefully he'll only serve about a year and then they'll release him to make room for dangerous criminals.

Sort of related.
Just came across a story, where a young guy in Russia (Ural, Ekaterinburg) on the way home spotted a 42 year old guy trying to rape a 9 year old girl. The guy, who has some belt in Jiu Jitsu, run after the pedofile and beat the **** out of him, and called the police.
Guess what, no prison sentence for the student. The local police and media praised the guy and his university paid for the rest of his education as a reward.

Good for them. :)

The law needs toughning up.

Found guilty of murder, rape, pedo, other sex offenses shoudl equal death by hanging.

Manslaughter & other violent offenses should be 20 years+ without parole.

Anti-social behavour should get you 10 years wihout parole & then deported if your an immigrant.

I would have a lot of people dead or locked away for life. :)

So you'd want the van driver in the OP locked up for 20 years+?

Can't believe some people think what he did was wrong! Some guy threatens you, then two guys turn up outside your house one carrying a bar and a knife and starts to threaten you again, smashing your car window ..wtf are you supposed to do? it could be seconds before your standing there with a knife in you, so what if he got ran over.

Drive away, you're in a big metal protective box, drive away, drive to the police station, problem solved.
