The father in law was saying he read in the local paper that police will now have the power to stop any cars with large bore/none standard exhausts and check they are of a legal noise level, and they can also contact your insurer to see if the modification is insured, if not they will seize your car if your exhaust void's your insurance. Is this actually going to happen or is it just some anti boy racer journalist getting his rant in? I dont know what paper it was in or even if it was todays one.
If anyone else has heard anything about this please post. I know some police in particular countys can be really strict on these such things.

Sounds like a good idea to me! It annoys me when people my age lie to insurance company and get cheap insurance, yet my parents won't allow me, thus leaving me financially un-able to afford a car (which is fair enough really!)

I thought police have had this power for agggeesss?

My dad got pulled on his Ducati probably going on 10 years ago now and they had a good nose around his carbon fibre exhaust and said that it was illegal. Luckily he managed to sweet talk his way out of it... AND a possible speeding fine :o:D

Police obviously have the right to pull vehicles and check them for any un-roadworthyness.

Checking if they're insured extras sounds like rubbish to me. I'm not an expert but i'd be very surprised. Very.

Its possible, and happening in areas where 'boy racers' are known to hang about.

At Festival Park (SOT) VOSA visit with a van to check your car out!

Ofcourse, they're able to spot check your car whenever they like if they feel the need to.

I'm also not so sure on the insurance but it's not a bad thing.

There's been a VOSA guy who turns up every few weeks at one of the cruises (i think that what they are called) at milton keynes hokey stadium on a Sunday night the amount that get fines is amazing but not surprising

Your parents won't let you lie to the insurers? I apologise if I misread that and you actually mean something entirely not awful! Oh, missed the braced bit for some reason!

There are noise limits imposed on new cars from the factory, but these are restrictions imposed on manufacturers, not specific laws for motorists - so I'm not certain how this would work for the individual motorist.

If a police officer deems your exhaust to be excessively noisy they can issue a VRN - you then have 7 days to repair the "fault" (even if the exhaust is noisy by design not through wear) and get paperwork stamped by a garage as proof of repair.

There is no noise limit as part of the MOT test (again, excessive noise or blowing is at the discretion of the tester)

An undeclared modification does not "automatically invalidate" your insurance policy, so I can't see this being part of the Police policy either.

I had a look at my current insurance policy and it say I must inform them of any modifications I do to my car that increase the performance in any way i.e. 0-60 time or top speed.. damn a set of decent spark plugs might reduce your 0-60 time..by what.. 0.1seconds and that seems a bit silly telling them about that. When I told my insurance about my s/s exhaust, filter, ecu remap, the asked me how much it increased my BHP by i said i dont know cos i havnt had it on a rolling road. Woman on the phone said.. oh well i'll make a note of the modifications in your policy.. no price change though.

Had mine tested on the bike before for noise levels. Not anything new I dont think, its not illegal to own a big 10 inch exhaust as long as its baffled up correctly to meet the required levels! I believe 89dB is the law?

One of my reasons for not believing the insurance bit, is that the insurance companies' questions on modifications are so varied and non-standardised, I cant believe that aspect would be checkable by police.

I don't mind the big bore exhausts, it is the stupid mopeds screaming away which is annoying :p

no not an iphone, its just a database that throws up all government stuff that the registration plate is linked to! It new all my details, all my insurance details, just from the reg plate
