does anyone have any experience of using VOIP or skype to replace their landline calls. ?

is it as good as a landline ?

BT is quoting me £125 for a new line and i was looking at my options.

Or you can get a skype phone that doesn't require a PC (and I'm not talking about 3's monstrosity)

is the quality good. ?
does it work as a landline would?
does anyone acutally use this as a main phone line?

thank you

I used to use a VOIP router with sipgates service.

It was hit and miss tbh. Tried it for a year and just wasn't happy with it so chanaged to normal phone as virgin were offering a great deal.

This was cheapo kit though tbh. Perhaps more expensive stuff is better.

Just out of interest whats wrong with the 3 skype phone, i was thinking about getting one?

Personally i'd go for a decent router with built in voip so your PC doesn't need to be on, otherwise you could get a WiFi skype phone but those are the best part of £100 and only work with skype, not other voip providers.

Another option is Vonage, although i believe they're having trouble getting a decent customer base here.

Seems expensive.

Plenty of companies allow you to simply pick up your phone, dial a prefix number and then your destination and thus call for very low rates. Parents call me here in CH for 0.5p a minute.

the thing is trying to get another line installed.

so the price is not the issue at the moment.

BT charge £125 for the line, and on a minimum contract which i am trying to avoid.

get a wireless skype phone, i've had nothing but success with skype since i started using it this year

Doesn't support SkypeOut or SkypeIn, you can only call other skype contacts for 'free'. The phone is also very plastic and unreliable, my housemate's one echoes your voice through the earpiece, the battery cover has broken and the phone randomly calls people when locked.

Still, its 50 quid.

I picked up a Philips VOIP841 a while back (ended up getting it free from Skype themselves - long story) which is both a DECT and Skype phone, and doesn't require a host PC for Skype calls as it effectively connects straight to the router. Haven't really used SkypeOut, but for Skype to Skype calls it's great, and the sound quality is excellent.

We're a business and we had 3 BT lines, ported 2 of the numbers over to Voipfone and ditched those lines, the remaining line has broadband on it, we then got a Siemens Gigaset 450IP and some additional handsets, we now have 2 'virtual' lines and save the rental each quarter as well as being able to call pretty much anywhere for 1.1p/min.

The quality is better than landline assuming you're calling another VoIP user.
