Hi,

I've just got a 360 (Falcon, BenQ drive), and was wondering if there's any plausable way of making it a little quieter?

Obviously the DVD drive would mean swapping it out (not sure if thats possible)

But what about the standard fan, is that swappable for a better/quieter one?

In short...No...

There are ways to eliminate fan noise and vibration noise from the case but the DVD drive is just so loud the other mods are barely noticeable.

Josh

Thanks

That's fair enought re: the DVD drive, I thought as much. But I will be using it a bit for media playing over the network, so anything that can be done to eliminate the normal fan noise would be an advantage.

There is a way, flash the DVD drive and choose the slower drive speeds, you will have slower loading times but the noise will go down, not sure by how much though. :D

Oh, this is also illegal and will invalidate your warranty, unless you happen to peel the warranty sticker off carefully with a knife and place it back on.

I haven't actually flashed my 360 for the record, I did on my old one though which I no longer have, you can select 2x, 4x, 6x, 8x and 12x drive speed if I remember correctly.

You can swap out the fans, doesn't really make them noticably quieter. You can wrap the DVD drive in dynamat, and mount it on rubber grommets, and then add more dynamat to the inside of the the case. This does actually reduce the noise, but does not make it silent. However after doing this to mine I finally finally noticed the noise from the power block. Had heard people mention that before but had never been able to hear it. Its quite noisey too, and I think theres a fan whiring away in there too.

Cheers, there doesn't seem to be much you can do that doesn't void the warranty - which I don't really want to do just yet.

Maybe I'll just stick to headphones? ;)

You can get Talismoon Whisper Fans designed for the 360 (that glow a cool green too :) )

Ive actually got these (picked up cheap on the bay) - decided against fitting them though as the 360 is one piece of hardware I do not want to invalidate the warranty on....

And anyway, the bulk of the noise from a 360 IS the DVD drive.

why not they are cheap as chips now.

I've had mine flashed :D

If I get banned I get a new one and sell the old one for parts /offline gaming. The price difference would be minimal as people are snapping up preflashed consoles like no tomorrow.

Very true my friend, unfortunately Im in a financial position right now where even 'chips' are out of my price range for the next 6 months :(

Just wait. It'll be DEAD silent soon....

ooooh, Yeah. I KID I KID!

Nah, as said, Flashing the firmware and slowing the drive is a way, But it's frowned upon

:[ <-- frown

find it ridiculous, any console is going to be loud as they don't install games, its from the dvd/bluray/whatever. You'll always get drive noise to quite drives are essential. Not having the option for drive speed as standard in the settings menu's is ludicrous, flashing the drive to make it quiet enough to not be irritating invalidating the warranty is stupid. Can't believe no one turned the thing on and said, maybe, just maybe, we should put in the option to run quieter.

AS someone who has heard the difference between all the different speeds and played the same games with diff speed drives. VERY few games suffer from lower speeds, theres 2-3 games that are supposed to be laggy/stuttery but i haven't found one. Maybe a few seconds more loading up a new area or whatever, few seconds here and there for massively reduced noise is a no brainer.

I know, I mean has NO-ONE at Microsoft got a brain ? I mean really.... How many people defect to Sony purely for this very reason. It's loosing them money, yet no-one at the microsoft gaming division, has the mentality to add this feature... I think they must follow down the road of, the bigger and louder it is, then the better it must be.

It's like the genius who can't tie his own shoe laces.

i just got a 360 few weeks back
dont think its very loud at all i hear my pc graphics card when gaming if i listen for it just the same
some people must have sensitive hearing

Nope, some 360's are really loud, they're not all created equally.
