Decent padding for martial arts training?

As title really; I'm looking for some good quality padding, probably shin pads, forearm pads, and knee/elbow pads.

Is there a lot of variation in quality, or is it all pretty much the same?

what do you do? has your instrctor recommended those? is it weapons based? quality does vary but you don't need to spend loads.
 
I do Krav Maga, so there are weapons involved but it's mostly unarmed (at my level at least; there'll probably be more emphasis on weapons later on).

My instructor hasn't explicitly recommended them but he and most of the people I train with have them. The shin/forearm pads are mostly for blocking full force punches/kicks.

Knee/elbow pads probably aren't too important at the moment actually as I haven't yet got to the level where there's a lot of grappling involved, but recommendations would still be good :)

Gloves might also be helpful but I'm not sure what type of gloves would be best for what I do, i.e. grappling gloves or boxing gloves.

well i can't help you that much as the only ones i use from your list are shin pads but from my experience of other things Black Eagle martial arts equipment gives you a pretty good quality/price experience. just google them, or ask the people you go with where they got theirs from, probably the best idea.

Yup there does seem to be and it can vary between the products within the range too unfortunately.

I have:
Blitz footwear - the sole has split away slight so I now do it bare foot. Not tried breaking yet with bare feet - only with the shoes (I still wear them for that). Although these are my oldest bit if kit (~ 2 years).

Macho Rival shin guards - no problem
Blitz Storm foot guards - no problem
Blitz head guard - no problem

Bytomic 12oz gloves - ok, padding is still good although I have a slight feeling that the inside fabric has a bit of a hole. I don't use these on hard pads such as focus mits though, usually for sparring although sometimes for soft contact bag work.

Champion bag mits - a bit pants. They're ok from the glove but the velcro strap usually comes off in a few hits.. very annoying. Not used for sparring as I'd hurt myself and my sparring partner!
Loose velcro means whiplash to the pad holder! Not too good for your wrists either. We usually wear wraps anyway.

Groin protector - I think this is blitz too, no problems with it.

Game Guard Gum shield - clear one is fine and has set well, I have a solid green one and I've heard these aren't as good at setting (not done that yet).

We don't use knees or elbows nor spinning backfist. More korean, almost TKD like style. So I can't help with those bits of kit.
 
Thanks for the input guys. I think I'll just get the shin and forearm guards for the time being. I was looking at the Kwon KSL ones – anyone tried these?

Yup. It's kickboxing.

I think when you start you'll be told explicitly not to use full force.

At this point in time, if you're starting sparring then you have some control but you're definitely not hardened to the impacts.

We start of non-contact on pads and forms, then move to sparring with light contact and now only in the upper levels as control is better we're starting to feel more contact (although still not full force).
I'm certainly not snap kicking to someone's chin full force.. even if they have padding on..
 
I haven't actually started sparring yet, but yeah I'm sure we won't be using full force at first. I was talking about controlled blocking practice, where it's easier to use force without posing any kind of danger to your partner. The padding's most useful for the attacker really as it hurts like hell when you've been feeding attacks for 15 minutes to a partner who's blocking hard :p Padding's just useful in this situation because it lets you practice the movements with more force.
 
Ahh I see. Yes it allows more force however one aspect of repetition is to harden the attack/defence, I'm not sure if padding would adversely affect that.
 
Yeah that's what my instructor said actually; while padding allows more force to be applied, you'll become more conditioned without it. So yeah, I won't be using it all the time, just when I need to :)

It's £35 per month for 1 lesson per week, £45 for 2, and £55 for as many as you like I think. I do 2 per week, which works out at about £5.60 per 1 hour class.

You need to go to an induction seminar first though; just email Steve (his address is on the website) and he can fill you in.

Well worth taking up though – it's really good for fitness and it's a very effective and easy to learn system to boot :)
