2002 1.8T Golf GTI in Silver (I am more keen on Black but Silver looks classy), Long TnT, 70K Miles. Looks in perfect condition (will obviously get HPI and RAC inspection done if I really like it)

Dealer is asking 5700 for it... Parker's online for avg mileage says:

Franchised Dealer £6,290
Independent Dealer £5,940
Private Good £5,535
Private Poor £4,475
Part Exchange £4,890

I think someone did say the other day on here that Parker's was tosh sometimes though. Any advice on what sort of room for haggling there is on these particular models? Prices on Auto Trader seem to be all over the place for whatever reason.

I'm dragging a more knowledgable mate along but would appreciate any pricing advice :)

I don't know much about golf pricing but it seems a reasonable deal if that cars in good nick. Similar price to an Octavia VRS of the same age and mileage.

Looking on Autotrader, that's quite over priced..

There's a 2002 70K miles black 1.8T Gti with full service history, etc for £4.5K at a dealers..

Thats below trade book and very underpriced. As a result, tatty is unlikely to be adaquete enough to describe it..

Hrm just seen that. 24 miles from me so not too bad. linky

Seems strange how they vary so wildly in price. I'll have a look at the silver one tomorrow anyhow and see what I think, that ad is a good bargaining chip although I'll probably go have a look at that Black one too [EDIT: My gut feeling says what Fox says].

lol.. it may well be, but it looks tidy enough from the Photo's to go and have a look..

When I've been car hunting with my brother, which is a frequent thing, he always looks at a broad price range, and quite often the lower priced ones are not as a result of condition, more someone wanting to sell quickly.. his M5 was at the cheaper end, but out of the 6 we saw it was in the best condition by far..

edit - nm...

Cheers for input as always.

Out of interest, do these 1.8T engines justify using V-Power or will I be alright on the standard fare? I get the feeling I need to wise up a bit as I want to take proper care of whatever I get :)

Check to see if the Coil Packs and cambelt have been replaced.

Price seems OK. Always room for negotiation with a dealer ;)

Check that the cam-chain tensioner has been done. And the waterpump.

The tensioners tend to start to go around 70-80k, and they aren't cheap to replace.

It'll be fine on regular unleaded.

Aye - saves wonga if done at the same time as the cambelt due to shared labour costs. Coil packs are probably OK-ish on a 2002, the really dodgy period was with 2000/01 cars. Still best to ask tho.

Yeah, the waterpump is generally done along with the cambelt. The cam-chain tensioners on the other hand are not. They are a rocker-cover and exhaust cam out job, and as such aren't exactly the nicest of jobs.

That said, me and firestar did his about a month back, and it is doable DIY, just make sure you mark the chain at TDC against both cams.

How much is it to get this done out of interest - if it's not been done I will factor into price. Thanks!

I seem to recall the part on its own (depending on revision of the engine) is £150-£250. Factor in labour costs and you're looking at £400+ for the job.
