Is describing someone as 'fat' derogatory?

Is describing someone as 'fat' derogatory?

Well I am fat, that is just a fact. If the term 'fat' is derogatory or not depends completely on the context within it is used.

I suppose almost any term for a physical trait ( weight, height, skin colour, hair colour, hair length, etc) could be derogatory, depending on the context.

I don't understand people who get offended by statements of fact about them. I'm currently very overweight due to a combination of crazy rugby injuries and knee surgery and a love of all things carb. I'm fat, I'm not offended by it. I'm currently dieting to lose the weight but I'm not offended if someone calls me fat. It can be used in a derogatory way and I personally don't get phased by that sort of thing but I could understand if you did but describing someone as fat isn't offensive in the least. That's like being offended for having size 11 feet and someone pointing it out. People are far too concerned about opinions of others. If someone calls me fat in a offensive way I either get amusingly sarcy or make some equally redundant comment about them.

True, and depending on how they reply, they could end up with a smack in the mouth:D

hahah yeah fortunately although I maybe be a 'fatty fat fatty' I still have my reflexes from many years of badminton/squash and table tennis. Last person who tried that hit the wall behind me. I once caught a guys fist as well but that led to further confrontation and I tend to avoid that as much as possible. I'm far too pretty to get hit in the face :p.:D

Violence is never the answer, but then again neither is diving face first into a pie for comfort so who can win:p

Violence IS the answer when a smug git thinks that he can get in somebody's face just because the subject is different to himself.

I elbowed somebody in the cheek once, for calling me a fat ****er. I was only a stone overweight. Therefore I had no compunction about dropping him like a wet sandbag.

BTW, your post is very much like something Stewie Griffin would say. Is it a direct quote?

To be fair anyone who insults someone else a point blank deserves what they get.

I don't think it's a quote I was just trying to take the mick out of a sterotypical fat person response to trauma.
