I'm going to upgrade my MB as the P5B is a little dated now.

I currently have OCZ Gold PC6400 4GB with a Q6600. It doesnt overclock very well and I struggle to get it stable @ 3.4. So I was thinking while I'm future proofing my MB should I upgrade to some faster ram.

Or would the speed increase be minimal making it a pointless £100 spend.

DDR3 prices are still out the roof so im not interested in that at the moment.
(Asus Formula MB)

Ive just done the same. Im running my E6600 at an 8X multi, so the FSB was 1700mhz. I couldnt get it any higher without stupid amounts of volts, so last week i bought some OCZ 2x2gb ReaperX 8000 stuff. Turns out it still wont go any higher so it wasnt my ram holding it back. (Am running a 2:1 divider and the ram currently runs at 850mhz).

If you can't get a substantial FSB OC, then you will see little or no gain from the faster memory. Save your money for DDR3 and Nehalem.

but that ram would only have to run @ 378 mhz to get the q6600 to 3.4ghz so it woudn't be the ram holding it back unless you were using a faster divider

Theoretically, you can get 3.6 with PC6400, 400x9=3600, so if you're struggling to get 3.4 it's not your ram, either your mobo or your Q6600 doesn't want to go too high without 3000 watts running through it :) Your ram is good stuff and I'm not surprised if it can run at 430,450 with adequate cooling. So, save your money for DDR3.
