People Who Leave During Games

It happened to me twice today during two ranked FIFA 08 matches, first match I scored two goals in the first ten minutes, one thanks to a flying header from Kuyt, and then because the keeper rolled the ball out and I just happened to run on to it and score. The second match, it was 2-2 and at the end of extra time, I belted a goal in from way out thanks to Torres and what happens? Game pauses, then "connection to opponent lost".

It's so frustrating - more so in the second because I was about to win, and I had spent all that time playing the match.

Why do people feel it's necessary to ruin games for people just because they can't handle losing? Or maybe I answered my own question. I think some people need to grow a pair and take it on the chin.

I can't recall if it counts as a loss/win or if it even counts as anything when they leave.

If the other person leaves the game it should count as a win to you.
If it was due to genuine connection issues then it should be null and void.

Thats in an ideal world, sad thing is, it probably counted for nothing.

You should get the win.

It is still annoying though. Especially if you only have time to fit one game in, and by the time they quit you don't have time to play a whole second game. So you get cut short :(

When I say don't have time, I mean if you have to go to work, or go out etc.

its all the french !!!!

seriously i was shocked that this happens in FIFA 08 after the farce that was pes 2006, youd have though they would have sorted something out. In my mind if you drop you lose the game simple as that if its your connection its tough. get a better connection.

what i do to minimize this is create you own ranked game, set did not finish % to lowest you can, should be 5< if u aint quit any. but some people still do it, nothing you can do to stop it.

i scored 6 againt someone in extra time from 0 - 0, they quit just before the end, was extremly annoying.

Twice yesterday in GT5 online i get into second over take first 'Disconnected from server' :(

It really bugs the hell out of me as i dont get my credits for 'winning':(

A few questions to those frustrated people out there, as I don't play online and don't have any experience of what you are talking about.

1. Is there a reliable method that games could implement to ensure that people quitting and people with genuine connection problems could be differentiated between?

2. If not, should games punish people equally whether it was there intention to leave the game or not?

3. Do you think simply losing the game/points/ranking/whatever is enough in these cases or should people who cheat (assuming this could be reliably proved as in Q1) suffer stronger penalties?

1. I don't know if there is.

2. I'd much rather they do differentiate, but I don't know if it's possible to do so, but besides - I've found it rare that I get disconnected in a game, same goes with other people, usually it's people leaving - at least from my experience. It's pretty aggravating when you put in the work to find out that you don't get anything from it. At the very least, you should get a win if they do, and to stop people squealing if it was a connection problem, then the people who did quit/lose connection should get a "Disconnection" point or something, or at the very least, get nothing.

3. Well seeing as it's them trying to avoid losing the points, I think it's fine, obviously if they're constantly doing it, I don't see why they shouldn't be suspended from playing online. It's disruptive behaviour, you get suspensions/bans in MMOs for disruptive behaviour, so why not on Live?

Being a complete simpleton when it comes to online gaming on consoles, is it the norm to have games that don't simply award the points to the 'winner' should the opponent disconnect from the game in question? Or does it vary between titles and publishers?

No

Yes

Quitters obviously don't want to play so ban them for 2 hours.

Well, I don't know about other games, but in FIFA 08 you don't get any points if they disconnect. I think though, that goals count towards your tally - they might be recorded instantly. *shrugs*

Bit heavy-handed, no? If you can't differentiate between people and you're unfortunate enough to experience a drop in connection during a game with a friend, 2 hours offline isn't going to make you a happy chappy.

I am amazed that games don't instantly award points/whatever to the opponent in these cases. I'm sure there's a reason but I can't think for the life of me what a sensible one would be.

Does FIFA have ranked scoreboards? I blame that most of the time, hence getting a few ranks and unlocks in things like BF2 i always go play on unranked servers

Was playing halo 3 earlier with a couple of mates and all 3 of us have decided to leave quitting feedback on whoever leaves the game (3 negative feedbacks basically ruins their rep). Serves them right to be honest

We were lucky though as it didn't happen to us atall, people kept quitting from the opposite teams ruining the games for everyone.

Used to happen all the time in Halo 2. In fact it was rare that someone didn't quit an unranked game :p

Costs money to implement, could be exploited by annoying people, who could just get insanely high number of point's if they got a mate to help them by just starting and disconnecting, people would whine about it, and it's best not to **** of the people who are buying your game, after all the people who get disconnected on, won't bad mouth the game, but these kind of people will tell all and sundry, about how **** the game is, and not to buy it.

No swearing

On xbox live i am usually wary about leaving negative feedback as you don't need evidence to prove your point so what is stopping someone you leave negative feedback to doing the same to you?

Its a difficult topic, i hate and i mean HATE match leavers/bad losers. However in the early days i was on wireless and used to get booted a lot. So why the quandry? Well the ideal system would be one that punished match leavers, like locking an achievement or something, or matching them up with each other, that would be fun. But then what of the poor guy with the iffy connection.

Fact is on live these days you need to get some friends who TALK over the mic, they are the ones who wont leave, they might bitch and moan but they will take defeat, the quiet ones are often the sulky kids who simply couldnt care less, or achievement hoars who dont wanna lose their streak (that should be fixed)

EDIT: on the neg feedback front ALWAYS leave negs for bad players and if they are complete idiots file a complaint. They wont see that you did it (its anon) and if enough do it they will get blocked from live. Had this one guy, Omega_Prime or something, on multiplayer Brain training thingy on live who just abused me over the mic constantly for about 3 matches (still beat him :D), i still leave him negs daily he's down to about 1 star now heheh still hoping for the ban.
