Ive basically built a new pc for my dad out of all the left over parts I have. I installed a brand new harddrive that arrived today. I formatted it and installed windows xp on it. However, Ive noticed that the in windows xp the system will just freeze randomly for like 5 seconds and after it would go back to normal again.

Whats going on with this p.o.s?
thanks

check your RAM

I had weird stutters and lockups recently on my machine - it was a Gigabyte P965-DS3 with an E6700 and 2GB OCZ Gold RAM.

I eventually traced the fault to one of the sticks of RAM, seems it was going for a while. I ran my machine on 1 stick for 24 hours and not a single problem. I have now upgraded to a Q6600 and 4GB of Corsair XMS RAM.

Second possible issue could be the hard disk going to 'sleep'. Go into power settings, check if the drives are set to power down after a really short interval. This is just a guess, but I have accidentally set my HDDs to sleep after 3 minutes before

I don't like to draw a raincloud over this but I remember having this sort of problem with one of my older rigs a few years ago, and when I traced it I found out I had a nasty combination of trojan and worm viruses on my hard drive (serves me right for not buying/updating Norton :p), anyway I had to format it to make things right again because they'd already damaged the registry.

Although I really doubt that's the problem as like you said you've formatted it, and I don't think those nasty bugs can get on that quick.

thanks for the replies guys.

Now its doing something else:

1. It was installing windows updates, i restarted, and the internet does work.

2. Two desktop icons (my network places and recycle bin) and really strange, there all mucked up and they look as if there full of artifacts or something.

what the hells going on?
