Hi all,

On Monday 31st I went on my first Jog with my mate Tim and his sister, I think in total about 4 miles also I went to the gym for an hour. I bought running shoes so I was comfortable

As I’m not really an athlete and I don’t exercise as it is, and couldn’t really control my breathing so had to stop a few times to catch my breath. But after it all I felt quite happy that I done it.

But I am struggling to find the drive to carry on  as my mate was there he was encouraging me etc. Also I did feel like a bit of a pleb whist doing it.

What drives people? Im tempted to go out in 5mins (6:30) with ma ipod n see what I can do.

Also

is it a good thing to eat something before you go for a jog/run ?

what does one do after a jog/run ? e.g. drink wise? (is lucozade) any good?

^ i know thats nothing as i said im not athelete not been running for ever! as my mate works there , got in free ... :E only did weights n that

I find jogging to be quite good for relaxation in some ways, just letting my thoughts drift because I've got no particular place to be or time to do it in and there is something quite settling about the steady footfalls. As for the breathing issue, in theory your body should just sort you out (does for me) but some people seem to need to concentrate on breathing for whatever reason, maybe try taking an inhale on every right footstep and an exhale every left footstep - obviously adjust to your pace and what feels comfortable but if you have to work at it then try to get a rhythm going.

//edit sorry missed that the first time round but as Zefan says you don't need anything fancy to drink - I just have some water when I get back, sometimes milk.

If you've never run before keep it to 3 miles and under for a while.

Don't buy into any of that sports drink crap, just keep yourself hydrated and eat proper food.

Okay thanks Semi-pro / Zefan ,

is it best to take water with you? like a drinks bottle? or drink loads when you get back?

Once you begin to notice and feel the improvements you're making with practise you'll be hooked. For me certainly, the feeling of knowing your fitness is improving is a massive ego boost.:)

Drink little and often, same for food. Definitely take water with you. Don't drink too much just before you go for a run or you'll increase the chances of getting a stitch.

^ okay thanks for that :) another noob question

What to ware? my mate said ware shorts n tshirt/jumper at most , what about tracksuit bottoms etc?

Depends what the weather is like, how fast you are going and what you feel comfortable in but apart from in summer I usually wear tracksuit bottoms and a light wind/waterproof jacket over a t-shirt. If it is really cold I might put on an extra layer but usually I'd just up the speed slightly if possible - not always the best idea if you are just starting out though.

Shorts and a vest. Be a man ;)

In all seriousness, I don't do much running at all, but I can't bare wearing trackies to run in, and I usually end up taking off the jumper.
Gloves a t-shirt/vest and shorts were fine for me, unless it's properly chilly.

i guess all to there own then really :P , i hate to ware shorts only ware them when on holidays abroad ..lol

As far as I'm concerned you should just wear whatever you feel comfortable with as you are more likely to keep on running if you feel ok while doing it. However aren't you already half an hour late for your jog? :p

i did just over 2 miles then i got a stitch & was killing me ..lolol :P so walked quick on the way back

For the length of 'jogs' you've mentioned - neither is necessary.

IMO, the effect of eating before exercise can't be generalised and is down to the individual, but the cause of a stitch is down to your breathing.

You sure you did 4 miles? Doing that much on your first go is impressive. a lot of runners don't even do that for their workouts. My friend was has been running for 10 years does a 5 mile run in 30 minutes 3 times a week. Thats tough even for him.

I personally have to avoid food for about 3 hours before I run which means I can be pretty hungry before I head out- usually have half a banana or something just before to keep me going. This time of year I don't bother with taking water because it's not that hot and I don't sweat enough to bother with it, I'm sure in a few weeks though it will be a necessity.

Currently working on building up to a comfortable 10k and working on my pace- at the moment I can run the distance but I want to build the foundations to become a solid 10k runner, I think it will be my favoured distance as a good mix of speed and endurance. Would love to be able to run a 45 minute 10k but that's a fair way off yet- my best 10k time is 55 minutes and that was a really flat course. I ran 7k in 39 minutes today on a hilly route so some way off the goal.
