First Jog - ... hmm ever :E

..at the moment I can run the distance but I want to build the foundations to become a solid 10k runner, I think it will be my favoured distance as a good mix of speed and endurance. Would love to be able to run a 45 minute 10k but that's a fair way off yet- my best 10k time is 55 minutes and that was a really flat course. I ran 7k in 39 minutes today on a hilly route so some way off the goal.

No idea what your training entails atm, but if you're comfortable with the distance, make sure you mix it up. Intervals, long (sub 10k pace) runs etc.

Plan is to get up to the distance gradually so that running 10k is a breeze (previous 10k runs have properly knackered me due to being totally unprepared) so at the moment I'm doing gradually increasing runs (began with 5k, now up to 8k, plan to hit 10k by the 20th April) with fartlek sessions as well as shorter distance runs (both for recovery and speed work). Once I hit the regular 10k runs I plan to train at distances beyond that like you said to improve my overall fitness and 10k performance, as well as interval work and hill sessions (might be a challenge when I get back to London!). I'm happy with how things are going, about time for some new trainers though.

Since I don't have one, do you think a heart rate monitor would be a useful training aid?

I'm not sure I agree with Zefan about sports drinks. The drink you require for jogging is to replace the salts etc that cause muscle cramps and to rehydrate..

What drives me?

It's bloody good for you! If you want to enjoy your life as much as you can you'll be able to do it a lot easier by staying healthy and the chances are you'll be around for a fair bit longer too.

Granted, I don't run and just train in the gym, but I take my training and my diet very seriously as the go hand in hand.

What to ware? my mate said ware shorts n tshirt/jumper at most , what about tracksuit bottoms etc?

Make sure you don't wear a T-shirt with a stitched logo on/near the nipple area! ;)

Personally I can't abide tracksuit bottoms, I find even in terrible conditions such as snow/rain shorts are fine but a hat and gloves are essential.

I use fetcheveryone.com. Loads of useful tips and you can measure your route using google maps
