First Car - This Punto a good deal?

That guy was a copper with must-have-diesel brainwash. It wasn't fat Jason's fault. He was also blown away by the 525d performance.

He also looked like David Schnieder of 'smell my cheese' Alan Partridge fame.

Note to self - must stop pvr recording old episodes of Used Car Roadshow.

Fwiw that Punto looks ok for the money if you want a small, low-insurance car. Fiesta regarded to be better though.
 
Ignore all these doomsayers, they are not bad cars, easily on par with the competition.

Its about the right price looking at the mileage. But considering the difference between one of these with 40,000 on the clock, and one with 80,000, I'd go for a higher mileage example with a good service history.

Thanks for your point of view. I haven't totally disregarded them yet. I'll keep looking around. I'm worried about buying something that will slowly self destruct!
 
Don't get the fiat punto. I remember having one and at 70mph it literally used to rock side to side. It was scary. Forget mondy's unless you want something like that (i know i wouldn't have wanted a mondeo as my first car). Maybe a fiesta would do you? They are pretty reliable cars and can take one hell of a kicking before they break down.

That isn't a design feature.. what the hell had you done to it? I'm sure if you broke the right bit, you could get any car to do that.

There is nothing wrong with a mk2 punto. FIAT are renowed for making good small cars. The Punto is a good small car, with definetly more going for it in the styling department than a fiesta. Something that has always irk'ed me, engine sizes. iirc the 1.25 zetec is a 1242cc engine, as is the engine found in the 1.2 Punto. Quite why Ford felt they needed to emphasise the extra 0.05 is beyond me.

Anyway, if you want a Punto - buy a Punto. :)
 
As stated by Gex first and foremost get what you want but I'd recommend getting out and possibly test driving (or at least your dad) a few of the different cars available to you. Every car has its problems and pick one that you like no one on here will probably drive your car... but people do offer good advice in between the rants.

IMHO the punto is ok. I agree with others saying that there is more/better cars out there for your money clio's and fiesta's are the route I would go personally.

Nothing wrong with punto's, ive just got rid of my mk1 which i had for 5yrs - i wont say it wasnt without any problems (non that werent to do with age and wear and tear) but all in all it was a good little car. Fiat - I bought a 10 year old high performance one and it didn't fall apart. The new ones must be amazing.

The old Punto was an ok car, though nothing special in the chassis department. The engines do have a tendency to blow head gaskets however, so make sure you do all the normal checks if looking at one.

It's going to cause significant problems being so fussy at this budget - very few cars do only 5k a year and those that do are no more likely to be minters but MUCH more likely to be priced at a premium to appeal to those still living in 1985.
