given the amount of time i spend on these forums, i should be clued up on this stuff but i'm not at all...... :o

i only need the mobo, cpu and ram. of course the cpu picks itself. i'll be getting a retail q6600. but what ram & mobo should i be looking at? can i clock it to 3.2 on the stock cooler or will i need extra cooling? i'm not interested in mega overclocking but am interested in a solid, stable system. i reckon i will have 300 notes to play with in a couple of weeks time.

my current system is ddr1/s478 so i know nothing about new stuff. help. :p

slightly over the £300, could go with the stock cooler to see what you think of it first:

G.Skill 4GB DDR2 PQ PC2-6400C5 (2x2GB) CAS5 Dual Channel Kit (F2-6400CL5D-4GBPQ) £49.99 (£58.74)

Tuniq Tower 120 CPU Cooler (Socket 478/754/939/940/AM2/LGA775) £27.99 (£32.89)

Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail £119.99 (£140.99)

Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £64.99 (£76.36)

Sub Total : £262.96
Shipping : £8.25
VAT : £47.46
Total : £318.67

thanks for the replies guys. :)

the budget can probably be stretched a little. it's not set in stone. i'm loving how cheap the ram is nowadays. last time i bought some it cost me 90 odd squids for 1gb of 2nd hand ddr. :D
