Hi Guys

I've just been informed that my order for a 42x3030 (£699.99) has been cancelled as I cannot have it delivered to the Isle of Man.

Is there any decent alternative in the Sub £800.00 bracket which can deliver the same if not better than the Toshiba?

Thanks :)

What you will be mainly using the TV for should ultimately decide which technology you go with.

Could you rank the following in order of preference please, then I can give you proper recommendations:

- SD viewing (internal freeview/sky/virgin).
- HD material (Blu ray/hd-dvd).
- Gaming (Normally HD too).
- PC use (As a monitor).

Also what is your viewing distance from the tv, as this will determine whether 1080p is needed or just a waste, plues how is your eyesight ?

£800 is a good amount to spend on a tv at the moment.

In order of what I want it for :)

- Gaming (1080p)
- SD viewing (sky)
- HD material (hd-dvd)

Normal SD/HD viewing distance is 10-12ft, however its normally 5-6ft when gaming.

My eyesight can be fixed with glasses, though its not that bad :)

My main problem is either buying locally on the Isle of Man or finding somewhere that will actually deliver here. The two local shops that sell bigs TV (yes, only 2!) are about £300-350 more per LCD/Plasma than the average online price of the same set.

My online shopping is limited to limited to online the two biggest etailers as they are the only ones who will deliver to me :(

Ahhh ok gaming most important. LCD might be better for you, but for standard tv LCDs tvs look pretty poor for television viewing, so bare that in mind.

At the distance you will be sitting, 1080p might be noticable, and that is a big might. I had to get within 5feet of the parents tosh x3030 42 to notice better PQ whilst gaming. Over that distance you would not be able to tell the difference between it and 720p, especially if viewing films.

I still highly recommend the panasonic plasmas out there, as they offer such a great all round package for a fantastic price (especially the PX non-1080p sets). I keep trying to tell people that 1080p with its higher pixel count, and 100hz DO NOT mean the picture will look better or even as good as some good 720p sets. The panasonic PX range and pioneer tvs are the best examples of tvs out there, and they are 720p.

I spent ages looking at tvs and discounted LCDs early on because they looked soo bad compared to the makes mentioned above. They might be better solely for gaming, but after taking my PS3 into (insert department store name), the quality of gaming on pana and pio plasmas was excellent compared to the samsung LCD and my parents toshiba. There games on LCDs looked more vibrant, but the colours were unrealistic and the blacks were very average like with all LCDs.

People might call me a plasma fanboy, but the technology is still far superior to LCD, and LCD has a fair way to go before catching it up.

Recently bought this TV, paid around £720 ish, and its superb for gaming (ps3 and 360) and its superb for Blu-Ray and HD content. SD content can be hit and miss but overall a superb TV. :D

Yea i agree. SD stuff i get some ghosting. Varies from channel to channel and DVD to DVD. HD stuff is very good though.

Im looking at a Toshiba 42Z3030DB at the moment. Works out at £830 delivered. And has better specs than the Samsung.
From what ive been told on AV forums, the Samsung sets as of late are good, but are bettered by a few other manufacturers. Aparentely anyway.

Just one other thing, i wouldnt have another Samsung after all the problems the F86 has. There are loads of issues with it, ive not got all of them, but ive got atrocious backlight, and darent send it back for fear of getting another with bigger problems

the m87/m86 suffered from similar issues with dodgy scart interference etc..

and you know the biggest gripe ? samsung UK dont have their own engineers. if you want a service call, samsung UK send out some company on a contract basis. they want a photocopy of your receipt so they can invoice samsung uk for their visit. Because samsung uk appears to be just a bunch of PR people and a few call centre staff. You start taking about scart interference and you lose them. Theres nobody technical working at samsung uk. And thats why germany etc.. gets firmware updates sooner than we do

I honestly wouldnt buy samsung again, Sonys on the other hand have no such problem and great customer care. (backlight bleeding excluded :D )

that will be the above mentioned scart interference. Effects all things SD.

Samsung have really good picture quality. but the Quality Control and After Sales service is terrible.

Does the Sony KDL-40V3000 suffer from ghosting and bad motion handling? I was lead to believe that all LCD TV's didn't handle SD stuff very well.
