Can anyone reccomend a decent video streamer?

Im looking for something like the Netgear EVA800.

Essentially i want to stream video (SD at the moment, hopefully HD in future) from my PC upstairs to my TV - directly below on the ground floor, seperated by the ceiling - standard wooden joists/floorboards. My router is a 54mbps jobby.

So...a) will i get enough bandwidth and b) Can anyone reccomend something?

Not sure about your LAN speed, but if that's a concern there are few hard drive based media streamers/players, so if it stutters when streaming copy to the internal HD.

I'd recommend a budget HTPC though, just for the sake of audio/video support as those streamers have a finite lifespan, and might have problems with certain formats.

Except that I dont want a budget HTPC....i want a device similar to the EVA8000.

In other words, a simple set-top device that simply plugs into the back of the tv and streams content from my PC.

I dont need a HTPC, and I dont need a games console.

Why not the EVA8000?

I think if you want to watch HD being streamed 'on the fly' so to speak then the EVA8000 would be the best bet... I've never tried one but it seems to get really good reviews.

If you don't mind allowing the movie to be cached to a drive prior to watching (SD should be fine to stream) then you might want to look in to.

Popcorn Hour A-100 (Hard to get hold of at the moment)
Istar HD

These are certainly cheaper than the EVA8000 so it's really down to your budget.

I used to use a Snazio until I bought a PS3 last year and found the PS3 did a better job of streaming all my content, is there any reason why your discounting the PS3 or X360, aesthetic reasons I can understand though some of the purpose built media steamers don't look amazing but would some thing like a EVA800 do a better job than a PS3 ?
Just wondering why you wouldn't consider a PS3 or X360.

Why not the EVA8000?

because it has an interface that belongs in the 80s

it looks like something you'd find on an amstrad. And compared to something like a 360 arcade, is really lacking in features

nothing comes close to the flexibility and ammount of features with the same quality UI as the 360.

PS3 does, but at double the price of an 360 arcade, you have to really class it as a Bluray player and streamer, so a different price league altogether than the EVA8000

AppleTV??

format limitations make this a no go. You can only stream apple supported formats, so you can forget WMV and Divx support. Something even the PS3 can do.

By the time you've added a wireless adapter and hard drive to your xbox 360 doesn't it work out costing more than a PS3?

It all depends if that would be a limiting factor for the grumpy OP though :D

Popcorn hour looks awesome. A few on ebay at the moment, though obviously a lot more than rrp.
