Basically i just want my xbox to stream stuff from my pc..

so i did this by plugging the cable into the port in my pc where my internet cable usually goes.

does this network them? if so. why doesnt my pc or xbox recognise the other.

also, since i have a spare network card. and an onboard lan... could i connect my pc to the net via onboard lan (as it usually is.) then plug the xbox into my nic card.. and share the connection?

im such a noob :(

Only way i know how to do it over a network is by ensuring your pc is set up as a media centre. Unfortunately, i have Vista Business so cant do it :(

are you using a router, or a USB modem?

If router, plug your xbox into that
if USB, plug into PC, allow others to connect to the net via the PC

In both cases, enable media sharing in Windows Media Player

thats only if you want to use the xbox as a Media Centre Extender

just to access your music/videos/pictures, all is needed is Windows media Player

is this a 360 or original xbox? if its an original one, you need to get it modded i think, which cant be discussed further on these forums, if its the 360, plug it into your router and it automatically gets detected on windows, well it does for me anyway

of course- i presumed it was a 360 he was on about.

If it's an original xbox, then it's not possible (out of the box)

its a 360 with hdmi lead, pretty recent..

PC is connected to internet via direct modem connection.. net comes from wall.. into modem.. then lead into pc.

i cant for the life of me get mp11 to stream it... basically my xbox says it cant find the ip address.. this is probably basic network stuff.

can someone give me a very simple step by step, including any settings i need to alter on pc network settings etc.

really appreciate any input as last night i spent like 1.5hrs messing about..

i managed to get the xbox to find my picture files but it wouldnt stream movies across. which annoyed me a tad.

Can you draw a simple picture of how everything is plugged in normally? I have re-read the thread and am still confused!!

Ok.. without a pic...

a white lead comes from the point in the wall (virgin media)...

it goes into a cable modem...

a lead goes from the modem into my pc motherboard for internet...

i just take the lead out of the modem, and plug it into the xbox, thats how i attempt to link the pc and xbox.

So can I assume that your xbox is not normally online? (Or if it is your PC is not at the same time).

If you take the cable from the modem and plug it into the xbox 360 (The Ethernet cable) how would it connect to the PC? (Unless I am mistaken at this point there is no cable between the PC and the Xbox).

You will need 2 network cards on the PC if you want to somehow have your PC and/or your 360 online. (Or do you want to just connect a cable between your 360 and PC and have them share media, without either of them being connected to the Internet)?

in regards to your question about the second NIC card. check this thread out

You should be able to do the same thing as in this thread, bridge both the network connections.

As for streaming, check you havnt disabled the media player network sharing service (i did this once and wondered why i couldnt share anythin). easiest way would be to go to run - type msconfig - services tab - tick "hide all microsoft services" and check the list, also check that your xbox is set to obtaining an IP and DNS automatically

You might want to check your windows firewall as well incase this is blocking file sharing

Sounds to me like he just unplugs his PC from the modem, and has a direct network connection from the 360 to his PC, no modem, or internet involved.

Which is probably why the 360 is complaining about network addresses and the like, since the router/modem would assign those.

To link two network cards, i.e. the one on your pc and the one in your Xbox, you need to use a crossover network cable not just a patch cable which you are using.

So your options are

1)Buy a crossover cable for less than a tenner. (but have to keep swapping the cable)
2)Buy a wireless router that supports cable not just adsl (This should do) and a wireless adapter for your Xbox unless the elite comes with one.
3)Buy another network card for your pc (if you dont have 2 already) and a crossover cable and then you wont have to keep moving the cable when you want to use the internet.

I'd opt for number 2 and use tversity to set up a media server.

Yeah sorry ive been AFK..

ive basically been just swapping the lead over and discarding the internet from the pc.

didnt really wanna spend money on a router. was just looking for the cheapest most straight forward option

the 360's ethernet port is auto sensing so it shouldnt matter if its cross over or patch (thanks to rp2000 for that one)

you can get a non wireless router for like £10 and an ethernet cable for £2

that is the cheapest way to do it, the best way would be to get a wireless router and the wireless dongle for your 360, but thats gonna cost you like £100 all in

do not buy another network card - the non wireless router would be the better option by a million miles, would create less stress on your pc if it is an older system

i def agree with the router advise. if you dont and go for the second NIC card, when ever you want to play online on your 360 you'll need your PC on to share the internet or just unplug the modem and plug it into your 360 as you have been doin
