NotFred Diskless Folding CD/USB - Download the new version!

It looks like its using two cores fine (I've also got a standard unit I'm finishing off and my CPU is at about 70%). The error message is a bit misleading to be honest.

I wonder if it's similar to the "hard drive image is corrupted, not backing up" Cob's post pointed out and we should ignore it. Open up a browser and goto 192.168.1.107 and see if you can monitor it's progress.

Got a reply from notfred (the creator):

It's because I was half way through doing a VMWare appliance (save and restore from a virtual disk - /dev/hda1) when Stanford switched the URL and I had to release early. Don't worry about the message, it's just saying that it can't find the VMWare virtual disk.

Only thing is that I am getting a *Hung* message in FahMon which is a little annoying :/

Got this running on an HP lappy im selling on the bay. Excellent. 10 days of folding on a P4 3.2. Every little helps. Im also wondering if a can borg my lasses workplace, they have 3 new pcs. Hmm . . .

Got this running. 200ppd :/ only 55 point WU's. I know its not the quickest pc, but even so . . . .

Has anyone had any problems with uploading the finished WU? My first one didn't work so I'm hoping that the second one has much luck.

Then again I've been having some problems with my new machine, installing the cisco VPN client for work knocked out ALL network connections :/

I set one up in a VM before, still got the warning messages but the FAHlog said it was working (3% when I left it). It'll be tomorrow when I get in from work I'll know if its worked.

IRT Yeggstry - I dont know any specifics, but I know messing with network connections can completely take out a work unit. Something to do with the way the threads communicate.

Well I had problems uploading the WU before I tried to install the network connections, and I'd restarted the whole machine to double check that the completed WU was uploading, and it vanished! :(

Hmm, I'll have to keep an eye on mine. Keeps spitting out that could not mount /hda1 message but the FAHlog and work unit backup are there so it's writing something to disk which is encouraging. The WU is at 19% at the moment. I just checked it now and the frame times are ~13m which is exactly what they were in Ubuntu.

Even if I see no improvement in frame times I think I'll keep it (if it completes okay) as it uses less RAM and I like the monitoring options.

Finally got this set up before I left for work this morning.

E6600 @ 3.7ghz running a single client via VMWare -

I'm going to spend a while this evening or tomorrow trying to get two clients running per VM.

Actually I've just noticed that it hasn't written anything to the USB drive.

Do I have to set up something in VMWare to enable it to see the USB drive?

yes you do. Go to Hardware in the VM settings and add the USB controller. Then when the machine first loads the kernel, go to the VM menu > removable devices > USB Devices > Select the USB drive you want. If this has worked the USB device should vanish from windows, and reappear when you close the VM.

If you can find a way of changing the name of the USB device let me know, I have two USB sticks of the same type and it took me a while to get two VMs setup to use one stick each.

I think mine is working, noticed a new WU got dumped while I was out so I assume thats it. Going to be hard to monitor whether I'm getting more ppd out of the notfred method though, but it has a smaller footprint than Ubuntu so its all good.

One thing that I'm noticing now is that with two diskless VMs working with 2 cores on each its only on 90% CPU. I guess I could have a look at the output with three, but I'll wait to see if Cob has any joy getting two running on one VM instance.

Well I've edited and re-made the .iso, and booted it in VMWare with the network disabled, but I'm waiting til the current WU finishes at ~1.30am before letting it download any clients.

So I still haven't a clue if the tweak will work :D
