Advice Request First Bike

Bit of a revival but i'm just deciding where to go for the DAS.
There, a place in stoke on trent that was recommended to my by an instructor of instructors, 35 miles from home, 5 full days plus test day, about 820 quid. Seems steep but apparently very good place. All equip inc.
Or . Place in notts my friend used. Can stay at his, not too sure of details but about 500. Another by home about same but doesn't supply any equip. What shall i do!?

£820 is very, very expensive.

I'm planning to book mine next week, and I've been quoted £485 for the following:

Day 1 : CBT on 125cc, with some road training
(1-2 week gap incase more work is needed on 125cc)
Day 2 : 500cc training on road
Day 3 : 500cc training on road
Day 4 : 500cc training on road
Day 5 : 500cc training, then test in the afternoon. (Fee included)

For £820, is the training 1:1?

Agree with the lot of that. The brakes are terrible , this will be the first mod i will do. Put some brakes from a GSXR on mine :D

if you do want GSXR750 brakes give me a shout and i've got some kicking around off an old K2 750 race bike. :) didn't know GSXR brakes fit an SV though? :)

about 820 quid.

it seems extortion isn't just limited to the yardies!

Hinckley Motorcycle Training (think its called that...) in hinckley (35-40 miles south of notts) does it for around £500-600 for all of it but that includes unlimited lessons i believe and as most of them are volunteers it means they do it at the weekends and week nights. :)

i've recommended quite a few people to them and all have said how good they are. :)

What's the place in Notts called?

It's called Excel and Pass I believe. bosh: http://www.excelandpass.co.uk/index.htm

Not sure if it's 1-1 or not, I might ask, but to be honest, the extra 300 on learning probably means less on the bike or equipment.. actually no, the only reason I wouldn't want to pay that much is if there's no need! I just want to make sure I learn as much as possible.

helpyou'recrap, i'll google maps that now! :p

EDIT: Oh why i s google maps pooing up? Maybe it's just me

Roughly the same for the Notts one, Excel and Pass. Thinking i'll probably go with that, should be useful staying at my friends as he has all equip and a bike I can go on the back of!

I went into J&S Accessories in Northwich today, which is also a Kawasaki Dealer, and I had a good look at the ER-6F (whilst buying a lid!).

Fireskull, what does your brother think of his new'un? I was very tempted, especially on 0%.

Just reading some reviews and the like and it appears to be doing very well, would be interested to see what they ACTUALLY go for brand new, after haggling and kidnapping peoples families etc.

So, ER-6F Opinions! I'm looking to buy in about a month.

He Loves it, and to be honest I quite liked it aswell, the rear suspension is pretty hard, but it goes quite well and is really stable when cornering considering its a big sitty upper :p

His is restricted and not run in yet but its still good for 90mph, prob still good for 110 when fully run in restricted.

oh good to hear! I rather did like it. Did you say he got in new, is there haggling as with a new car? I.e. "give me that cover, and those bobbins and that mirror extension kit!"? Heh

Yea you can try and haggle as much as possible, every dealer assistant is different lol, we got a good deal on his apparently dont remember the price though, will find out if you want, came with alarm and restrictor kit included in price.

BOOM! Thread revival with a 5+ years progress update:

I passed the DAS, got carried away and bought a new 2008 SV650 Sport.

A couple weeks after getting it I went on a bike trip to Holland, Luxembourg and back. Then Wales for a while. Then I did the front lock-up at 20mph and broke lots of expensive plastic. After getting it fixed I got bored of living in London and having to go so far for good roads. (Also maybe lost my nerve slightly on heavy braking). Sold it.

After just over 2 years without a bike I got sensible and bought a used 2007 BMW F800ST.

It was a delight, and had ABS which helped me get over any previous mental head issues. This bike got used and abused for just over 3 years of commuting and numerous trips to Scotland, Wales, south west etc.

However since year 1 of BMW ownership I'd had my eye on something bigger in the BMW garage. The F800 engine starting to sound a bit piston-slappy, annoying build quality issues ("oh hai engine casing, where is your paint?", "oh hi overly complex poorly design heat exchange, looks like you're leaking!", "OH HI CORRODING REAR SPINDLE THING" etc. etc.) made it easy for me to justify:

Chopping the 800 in for a lovely 2009 BMW K1300S.

I've had it only a couple of months or so but so far it is simply awesome. Obviously having more than double the F800's power helps, but it also feels far more refined, as a once-flagship bike should. The build quality, switches (idiot early ones recalled), pegs, suspension bits all look and feel like they're built to last (they damn well better). I suppose the extensive fairings also help to avoid any potential engine corrosion too. The hilarious chain jump-guard recall just got done too, which puts my mind at rest (though also reminds me how stupid manufacturers can still be).

In short I love it. It's been my dream bike for a few years and now I have it. Just had its major 18k annual service (valve check) which 'only' came in at £450. The only trouble now is whatever I get next I'm pretty sure I have to keep this too! (or a newer one of this of course!).

Oh, I should add that at the service they found the front shock to be leaking, which is set to be sorted under warranty in the next few weeks. I was without a warranty with the F800, but with this thing I decided it's worth it.

So yeah. That was a story all about how... I learned to ride, got a bike, broked it, fixed it, sold it. Tried to deny myself, failed, bought another bike. Learned to ride properly, got bored, bought a hilariously great bike. Watched some TV. Baked some bread.
