9800GTX vs 8800GTX

Devious did a nice review of the 8800 GTX against a 512 GTS ( read 9800 GTX ) and the feeling was the 8800GTX was the way to go.
Its difficult situation because you have a card that is 2 year old that can easly compete with the latest tech but your mind says old technology and the latest technology must be better?? or is it !!
At the end of the day there isn't much in it. The 9800GTX tries to compete with the 8800 GTX through brute force while the 8800 GTX uese a balanced design to achieve results.
You can't go wrong either way but I would say the 8800 GTX is still the card to plump for especially with the latest OcUK pricing.

The 8800gtx seems to pull ahead when high res and AA/AF are applied, and with a cheaper price tag, you can't really go wrong with it.
The 8800 GTX is £30 cheaper.

Definately the 8800 GTX, more memory, bigger bus, faster, and the clincher, its cheaper.
then that will depend on your monitor sizewhat if the 9800GTX is cheaper?say 15-20 quid

Then I'd say don't get the 9800 GTX just to stick it to nVidia for releasing such a mediocre product.

A pretty pointless discussion to be honest as everyone has a different resolution so you can't get an answer (no cheek intended). 1920x1200 resolution then I'd get the 8800GTX. 1600x1200 then I'd get the 9800GTX.
well 1680x1050 is pretty close to 1600x1200. and have a look at Crysis Very High 1680x1050 benchmark, see which card top the single GPU chart: 8800GTX
at 1280x1024 or below, G92 is good. anything else, 8800GTX still dominates.
I can't believe you just said Crysis. It's one game for crying out loud. I don't know why everyone mentions this title. You play it, you complete it. It's over.
The 8800GTS 512mb is even good up to 1920x1200 in a lot of games so I don't get why you'd think the 9800GTX wouldn't be either. It's when you lavish on AA/AF/HDR is when the extra bandwidth of the GTX will start to power through.

. Sorry but you are wrong. That's the 320Mb 8800GTS's best resolution . Your post is confusing the hell out of me as it doesn't make sense unless you meant just in Crysis and if you did mean that one title then I have to say this. We don't buy, build and overclock our PC's just to be able to play one game when there are loads of other great looking games that run like butter.sorry, im not going to argue.

with increasing texture resolutions, 320MB is a dyeing card. it won't be good in anything. not even Crysis.
yes, it's a single game, but it is THE game top graphics card cannot max, thus THE game to be used as a benchmark. all other games are pointless due to the fact that any top end graphics card can play at reasonable resolution with playable FPS.
besides, AA/AF is lavish feature anyone would want if they were spending 200 or more on a graphics card, so IMHO, 9800GTX is not a suitable graphics card for gaming at anything higher than 1280x1024
