Had a fabulous trip up north with a small group of like-minded individuals last week, not posted anything for about 6 weeks so thought I'd share them.

Here is a wee batch of shots taken on Wed/Thurs

Any CC most welcome, thank you for looking :)

===============================

We reached Rannoch Moor as the sun was coming up, we pressed on ahead to the famous Buachaille in the hope that some spectacular rays of light would illuminate the snowy peak (shot of a lifetime stuff if you know what I mean)...

But, nothing happened except for lots of snow!

Next up from Wed, a quick stop at Loch Linnhe (just before you arrive at Fort William).

Not the most exciting shot in the world by any means (if you ever see the loch you'll see it's not really all that inspiring...) but I quite like the curve in the foreground so figured I'd just post it anyway

On Wednesday afternoon we took the Elgol Road and stopped on the Strathaird side of Loch Slappin. Having researched the area I knew there was a photogenic location nearby, however I knew this would also require a hike.

When we got to about 700ft we were met with the most spectacular setting - a superb river with wonderful textures and colour, and the threatening and moody Hills in the background. The snow on the hills adds even more to the scene, absolutely wonderful spot and one I shall look to revisit next time . I think this one is going to have a rework as it has an almost 'photomatix' look to it at the moment (something I'd rather avoid...)

And a moody pano from the same location:

When the sun went down we headed to Eilean Donan Castle at dusk, luckily Loch Alsh was like a mirror and there was plenty of snow in the background mountains, bonus!

Onto Thursday, we rose early in the hope of catching a sunrise - I had a specific viewpoint in mind but we were running a bit late so decided to just pull over at the road and make the best out of what we could

I didn't think I would have a keeper from this particular shoot but this one I am surprisingly pleased with. I left the tree tops at the bottom to help complete the frame and give the scene a little more depth.

6. Sunrise Sound of Raasay

...and a moody mono looking to the mainland as the light got a little harsh

Next up, round to Staffin Bay down to the shore in the hope of catching some waves, I looked around and the light was catching these cliffs so I slapped on the CPL again and got this which has got a bit of potential for either a colour or mono frame (this is more or less straight out of the camera need to burn in the corner a little):

8. Rubha Garbhaig

17mm | f/11 | 1/20sec | ISO-100 | CPL

Next stop, the Quiraing, a spectacular geological formation. At this point the sun was quite intense but coming from a 90 degree angle therefore bringing out the textures in the rugged landscape, I slapped on the CPL again to cut through the haze and make the scene pop out a bit more, this one definitely has potential for a mono conversion later..

If you look about 90 degrees to the right from where I was standing at the Quiraing, this is what you see:

We pushed on around the northern loop scouting out the landscape, as we headed towards Uig I spotted a wind farm in the distance and just had to try and get a shot of it. Finding a good viewpoint was quite difficult and in the end I settled for this where we parked up in a tiny hamlet called Totscore and I got the big lens out.

As evening approached we had high hopes for a spectacular sunset but it just never happend unforunately.

Down at Elgol, the scene was rather muted, and I hope this frame conveys this. I toyed with giving this the mono treatment but I love the subtle colours

I love those, especially the colours in number 2, 6 and 9. Not quite so keen on the water at the bottom of number 3, the long exposure time has made the water look a little bit out of focus (or is it wonky?) in my eyes, but the rest are superb, thankyou for sharing :)

iGiDK - Any chance you could do me a massive favour and upload a 1920x1200 version of pic 10 to use on my desktop?

No problem if you cant/dont have time.

Massive thanks if you can.

Nick

edit - meant to say nice pics, guess that figures as I want one for my desktop lol, Love 3 too but it wouldnt work too good in widescreen :)

Lovely set, don't think you could improve on them in any way at all. Thanks for sharing, superb photos :)

3, 4, 5 and 10 stand out for me. All in all a stunning set, though! It would be a crime not to get some of those printed.

I know the horizon is flat in 6, but it just really looks wrong to me. In 5, which is probably my favourite, I'd be tempted to clone out the gatehouse (?) on the left, just to keep the focus of the image on the castle.

Thanks for the feedback mate, it may be motion blur from the running water that you are referring to?

1,3,10,12 are stunning mate! very much like those

cheers!

what can i say - nice work!

thank you very much :)

Thanks mate, fire me an email (addy in trust) and I'll see what I can do for you when I get back from London

I doubt I'll ever be looking to showcase or exhibit #10 so I've no problem with that - there are one or two here that are keepers for me though so I'd be a bit reluctant to post them over 800/1000px, cheers

Brilliant images mate.

ta very much, aye it's about 200miles to the Skye bridge from where I stay (4 hour drive from Central Scotland) so it's a fair trek even for me!

Thanks very much for the honest CC mate, appreciate you taking the time to add your comments

If I missed anyone, thank you for your comments. Part II on the way :)

Nope

I tried photomatix on a few shots last year but I just... hate it

My PP usually involves applying quite a punchy contrast using curves and I use the high pass filter to sharpen.
