As the title states? I've used the free version of AVG for years but having just installed Vista 64 I now find that only the retail version is compatible. Are there any other free alternatives worth looking at, or do I bite the bullet and start paying?

I used to use AVG on 32-bit XP but I've been hearing a lot of bad things about it lately so might not be the best choice.

If you want free I'd go with Avast or, if you're prepared to pay a bit, Kaspersky. The latter is only 12 quid for a home user licence or 17 quid for three licences.

I currently have Kaspersky Internet Security on my XP desktop machine, but have noticed that I currently do not have any Anti-Virus protection on my new DELL XPS laptop, and have also wondered what is the best for my 64-bit edition.

Is Kaspersky good for the laptop version as well, or is there any other programs that are more appropriate?

If you have more than one license of kaspersky then use that on your laptop as it does support 64bit. If not don't bother paying for one, Avast is good enough and has full 64bit support best of all its free.

I have decided to go against all the advice of the conflicting people here about the free software and decided to spend the £11.75 that has given me a 1yr licence for Kaspersky Internet Security 7, as I have been really happy with that on my desktop PC as it has stopped a lot of stuff from getting through :D
