Sensible price for an oil & filter change?

Like I said above - there are many BMW LL01 oils approved although all are more expensive than the sort of stuff you get down your local Ford dealer. Clarkey was basically saying all oil for under £20 is crap irrespective of car, and backed this up saying he only uses Castrol in his.

Surely you can see as well as I can that this is untrue. For regular, mass production, proven 4 cylinder engines there are numerous sub £20 oils which are more than suitable and will work well.

What exactly is wrong with using better than minimum then?

Yep. The longest part is waiting for the old stuff to drain out. The last oil change I did was on the 200SX, jacked it up so you can slide a drip tray underneath (90 seconds maybe?), undo the sump plug, (10 seconds), stand up and reach down into the bay and undo the old filter by hand (45 seconds)

Wait for it to drain (some cars drain fast, some don't)

Wipe off any oil that's drooled over the block (45 seconds) replace filter (20 seconds) do up sump plug, slide out drip tray, lower car (60 seconds) fill oil (30 seconds)

DONE

When doing the volvo don't forget the undertray, will double you time

Nothing is wrong with it, but it could perhaps be considered un-neccesary expenditure in much the same way is there is technically nothing wrong with using VPower Unleaded in a VW Polo 1.2. The thing I took issue with, however, was his implication that £20 oil is rubbish which should not be used.

This is not true. For many applications, you can buy the oil you need and a filter for £20.

was thinking this today, disposal of old oil could be a pain for some? And less than £20? Sure on those prices? Nice and cheap if so though!

You can take waste oil to you local tip.

Having done a couple of oil changes two tips.

Make sure the oil filter will come off easily before draining the oil if you don't own a strap wench.

Don't do it on a really windy day.
