Hi

Was just playing FarCry, and suddenly got a red hazyness on the screen, and was then dumped back to windows at what looked like 640x480 at a really low and dodgy messed up colour depth. There was a message saying that the driver nv... (the nvidia graphics driver) has stopped working and you need to restart the machine. I then looked at the RivaTuner hardware monitor. The driver crash meant it wasnt recording temp any more, but about 20 seconds before my 8800GT was at 80 degrees, something ive had it at loads before playing Crysis etc.

So, does a driver crash mean the drivers borked and I should grab the latest firmware (im at 169.21 on XP) or is it related to heat and the card dying (which is a bigger problem)?

Cheers

Related to heat mate.

I get it all the time with my 8800GT (Exactly the same symptoms) unless I set the fan up to 100% on Riva Tuner. The problem then goes away and are able to play games perfectly. How long have you had your 8800GT? Pretty soon after they came out? With the smaller fan?

Yeh exactly the same fan :(

The fan is stuck on 30% Mine gets up to 85c+ The black screen and pausing in games is when the core gets to a certain temp, the core stops for 20-30 seconds for the GPU to cool down.

The only real fix is to replace the cooler. Although another way is to set a fan profile within Riva Tuner. When the GPU gets up to a certain temp you can tell Riva tuner to wack the fan to a certain setting... or just put up with a leaf blower and set the fan to 100% all of the time :(

I can't believe they Nvidia shipped these cards out like this. The cooler on my 7900GTO was amazing.

Ive got custom fan profiles.

It was hovering around 80 degrees for about 10 mins previous to the crash, as as soon as it hits 80 the fan goes to 80%, between 70 and 80 its at 60%. it holds it their fine. So with the fan at 80% and the core at 80 degrees it still crashes? Thats rubbish!

I have noticed a massive change in idle temps depending on where my PC is. It usually sits under my desk between 2 boards with the side fan blowing in over the card. If i pull it forward so there is no obstruction at all to the side fan ive seen idle temps atleast 8 degrees lower. Its already dropped from 58 to 55 in the time its taken to write this edit. Ill see if that works.

Indeed, is the card overclocked?

When I play COD4 I have to set the fan to 80%~100% otherwise it crashes. That is with a Overclock - 720/2050
With the fan @ 100% and the overclock the temps are around 65-70c.

820? you sure? the stock is only 625 and mines at 700/2000. Ive played all games at these clocks and had Crysis with temps up to 85 and been fine...

was gonna say, 820 would be a mighty impressive OC.

Still trying to register this blimming card with BFG. there new proccess is poo
