I hear what you are all saying, but not my money, and someone that 'knows best' at the helm :P

How can not having either make it take longer. Any car dealer will let you take away a car there and then for cash. Does the guy selling the cars owe your dad money?

Personaly I can see the virtues of both cars, and I think you'll be happier having a good look and a drive in both and making your own mind up.

only advise i can give you is never ever rush buying a car espically a basic focus with no a/c or leccy mirrors or heated screen!

focus or fabia? focus for me.. nicer drive, better handling, better image (hate the fabia, whats the point in it when theres the polo it's just saying i can't afford a vw so i had to get the next best thing, well imo anyway..)

Not really they're the same car. I see a Polo and I see a guy who threw money aweay because he didn't do his homework and discover he could get the same car for less. It's even worse when I see V - 51 plate Polos which are an older model then a Fabia made at the same time.

My Focus is hardly a high speed cruiser, it's ok upto about 80-85 but after that gets pretty lethargic, and can be a chore if you meet a steep incline. Not a problem for me as I rarely cruise much over 70 so it's a decent motorway cruiser but Im guessing the 1.4 Fabia will be worse off with it's lower torque.

Cruising at 90-100 is perfectly do able on a private runway in the 1.6 I've only noticed it lose puff after 100 :)

When I drove a 1.6 focus is ran out of puff at about 70mph, took an age to get up to 90ish!

Can't imagine it'd sit very nicely at 90-100mph at all, well maybe foot to the floor with no wind/incline.

As a means of getting around (which cars in this category are) then you go for the one thats the nicest place to be in when driving.

Hi all!

Thanks to the people that knocked some sense into my car buying decision!
I waited a week and now have a 1.8 Focus zetec, met black, aircon, alloys, cd/mp3.
04 plate, 40,000 miles, cheaper than we were looking at.

Awsome!
Cheers.

Weird. 70-90 is fast enough even in 5th, if you want to get there faster 4th will do it. I drove to on a private runway ;) at those speeds cruising without my foot to the floor. Anything above 100 requires pedal to the metal and some floor abuse :p

I've found it surprisingly adequate on the motorway. A little more power would be nice but since I don't drive the motorway often I can live with it :)

Rubbish, my 1.4 astra would sit at 80mph quite comfy.

No contest really.

The Fabia is rubbish. Horrible, floppy, soggy handling car.

So the Focus wins by default. I wouldn't buy one without aircon though....
