Pompey for the FA cup?

In all honesty, the prospect of watching Portsmouth vs Cardiff doesn't inspire me. Its unlikely I will watch the final. Whilst this year's competition is great for the fans of those teams that have made it, for the neutral I personally find it poor with regards to the standard of the final. Upsets along the way, great. An uninspiring final - no thanks. Sad but true for me.

Correct. They have however qualified through the FA Cup.
How have they? Even if Cardiff aren't allowed to enter the Uefa through the FA Cup, if Cardiff were to win it the Uefa place wouldn't go to Pompey but an extra place in the league.

If Pompey don't qualify through the league then they'll have to win the FA cup to qualify for the Uefa.

Now I'm confused. I was sure Portsmouth would get the place even if Cardiff won.
Im not sure why you thought that?

The old rule stated that if the winner had already qualified then the finalist would get the Uefa spot, which wouldn't be the case if Cardiff won it.

They've now changed the rule so that if the winners of the FA Cup can't take the Uefa spot then it goes to the league (designed for CL winners winning it but im sure the same would apply if a team was blocked from entering too). So if Cardiff are not allowed to qualify for the Uefa for some reason then im pretty sure the spot will go to the league.

'If Cardiff City win the FA Cup then, as it stands, they are not allowed to qualify for the Uefa Cup because they are registered with the Football Association of Wales and would not be put forward as one of England's representatives. In that instance, the FA Cup runners-up would take their place in the Uefa Cup - although the Football Association are reviewing their rules.'

Has it changed since that article?

I think the bit about the runners-up taking Cardiff's spot is a presumption. AFAIK there's been no clarification as to who would take the Uefa spot. Logically it should go to the league as it would if the winners had already qualified ,on the basis that the runners-up shouldn't get a Uefa spot just for reaching the final.

This will be a very good final in my eyes.
Normally when its 2 of the big 4 its a snore fest. They go so defensive and bearly make any runs or chances.
With these 2 teams it will most likely be end to end football, throwning players up into the box taking the gamble.
Sure the players don't have the class of the top 4 teams, but i would much prefere see an end to end game than a netural wait for some one to make a mistake and try and score from it.

Plus if cardiff win and we don't get the Uefa place we will probably take it to court or something.

Just like the semi-finals were?

Kind of deserved in fairness. They play in the English league, and take part in English competitions only. As such, they should really be treated as essentially an English club, and be entitled to the same UEFA spots the other clubs are.

Whether they should be in the English league in the first place is a seperate argument imo. If they weren't, they'd be able to qualify through the Welsh league/cups. But they do, so they can't.

But Cardiff competing in the English league means that an English club is nudged down a division, pushing them out of contention for Europe. Therefore Cardiff were unable to qualify for Europe so that English clubs didn't miss out. I reckon that must have been the reasoning for the decision in the first place.

They should have a choice. Compete in England sacrificing their European qualification or compete in the UEFA Cup and go back to the Welsh league. I wonder which they'd choose.

In my opinion they should not be allowed to qualify.

Yeah I imagine so. But it still shows that they are gaining an advantage from being in the English league that they wouldn't have otherwise had which isn't particularly fair.

Im not sure who it's not fair on? We're still getting our full allocation of spaces as will all other countries (i'd imagine they'll have to go through all the qualifiers).

Uefa have made a special case for them and it's something that isn't going to happen often but if it does then im sure something official will be done about it.

Oh, I stand corrected. According to Wikipedia, Cardiff still took part in the Welsh FA Cup as recently as 1995. If they're still allowed to take part in that, then sod them, they can play in that if they want a UEFA Cup place.

EDIT: Although a wildcard wouldn't bother me so much, since it would likely be an extra as said.

Other clubs that still compete in Wales? Not only are they worse off financially through not having the opportunity of competing in the English leagues but Cardiff still have the opportunity to play in Europe.

I just don't think its right that they should sacrifice their place in european competitions and then as soon as they have a chance to play in the UEFA Cup, they threaten legal action over it. I just don't like it.
